Key Highlights:

  • Bethesda confirms a second Starfield story DLC is in development.
  • Free updates will continue, including improvements to space gameplay and new game systems.
  • Shattered Space, the first expansion, launched in September 2024 with a new planet, weapons, and gear.
  • No details yet on release timing or rumoured PS5 and Switch 2 versions.

Bethesda isn’t finished with Starfield. In a new developer spotlight video, lead creative producer Tim Lamb confirmed that the space RPG will continue receiving regular updates, including a second story DLC.

This comes on the back of Shattered Space, which launched last year and introduced a new planet alongside additional gear and weapons.

You can watch the dev spotlight video below, and the Starfield talk starts at the 4:21 mark.

Lamb stopped short of revealing specifics about the next expansion, but he did share what the team is currently focusing on, stating:

“We have some cool stuff coming, including free updates and features that players have been asking for, as well as a new DLC story.”

He also noted that part of the development team has been working specifically on space gameplay to make interstellar travel feel more rewarding, alongside new systems and smaller quality-of-life features.

In my opinion, this is exactly the area that needed attention. Starfield’s ship combat is fine, but the stretches between those moments often feel thin.

Players have been vocal about wanting more variety in space, whether through encounters, exploration hooks, or reasons to stay engaged between jumps. If Bethesda can deliver meaningful activities beyond standard dogfights, it would go a long way to making the galaxy feel alive rather than just a backdrop for planetary quests.

The first DLC set the tone by expanding the playable universe, so it’s natural to expect this follow-up to build on that foundation.

Some players are speculating the story might tie into the Starborn elements of the main game’s conclusion, which would make sense narratively.

Bethesda tends to extend its big RPGs by deepening lore threads left intentionally open, and Starfield has plenty of those.

It’s worth noting that Lamb avoided addressing rumours of PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 versions, which have gained traction recently. A reliable leaker suggested Starfield could hit both platforms in 2026, but until Bethesda confirms anything, those reports remain speculation.

For now, what’s clear is that Starfield is evolving. Free updates will cater to the community’s most-requested features, and a new story expansion is officially on the way.

Personally, I’d like to see Bethesda push harder into systems like station building or even underwater exploration on alien worlds, both of which would add more diversity to the experience. These might be wishful thinking, but given Lamb’s comments about new systems, there’s reason to stay optimistic.

Bethesda has a track record of iterating on its RPGs for years after launch, and Starfield looks set to follow that same path.
