No Man’s Sky Hits Highest Player Count Since 2018

An astronaut runs through a futuristic space station in No Man's Sky, with a colourful growth graph overlayed in the corner.

Key Highlights:

  • No Man’s Sky has hit its highest Steam player count since 2018.
  • The Voyagers update introduced Corvette ships and new features.
  • Steam peak reached 93,332 concurrent players on August 31.

No Man’s Sky has just seen its most impressive player resurgence in years. On August 31st, the space exploration title hit a peak of 93,332 concurrent players on Steam, its highest total since 2018.

The spike follows the release of the Voyagers update on August 27th, which added Corvette-class ships, a new Expedition, and several free features.

To put that into perspective, the game’s all-time peak was over 212,000 back in 2016 at launch, though that number was inflated by hype.

Since then, only the NEXT update in 2018 managed to bring numbers close, with a peak of just under 98,000. For most of this year, the game averaged between 5,000 and 10,000 concurrent Steam players. Voyagers has clearly reignited interest.

As of this writing today, the player count currently stands at 52,974.

What stands out to me here is how No Man’s Sky has become the go-to example of a redemption story in gaming. At launch, it was derided for being empty and overpromised, but Hello Games never abandoned it. The studio has released update after update, all free, and now the game is arguably stronger than its original vision.

I’ve covered a lot of live service titles, and few manage this kind of turnaround without a complete relaunch.

It’s also worth stressing that these numbers only reflect Steam. Factor in PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch, and the real player base could be double or even triple. That scale matters because it shows No Man’s Sky isn’t just surviving, it’s thriving across platforms nearly a decade after release.

Hello Games isn’t slowing down either. Alongside Voyagers, an Experimental update is already being tested to smooth out issues with the new Corvette systems.

More content is expected later this year, and if history is anything to go by, Hello Games will continue to expand the game’s scope without charging players extra.

For me, the most interesting takeaway is that No Man’s Sky has gone from one of gaming’s biggest cautionary tales to one of its strongest comeback stories. Few titles maintain relevance this long, let alone grow their audience nearly 10 years after release.

With Voyagers breathing new life into the game and future updates on the horizon, No Man’s Sky feels less like a game clinging on and more like one that has firmly earned its place in the live-service space.
