The Leather Jacket is one of the most recognisable clothing pieces in Sons of the Forest. It’s not just for style either, it offers a decent mix of Warmth, Comfort, and Water Resistance, making it a useful all-rounder.
Early on, both the player and Kelvin start with the Tactical Jacket, which does the job but doesn’t offer much flair or protection. The Leather Jacket is the clear upgrade, and you can pick it up surprisingly early with little risk if you know where to look.
There are two guaranteed locations where you can grab a Leather Jacket: one at the Plane Crash Site and another in the Rebreather Cave.
The Plane Crash is the safer option since it’s not guarded by enemies. To reach it, open your GPS and head south towards a thin strip of land just below the three small lakes. You’ll spot the wreckage easily. Inside the cockpit, you’ll find a pilot’s body with the Leather Jacket draped over him. Pick it up and equip it from your inventory, or hand it to Kelvin to change his look.
To give it to him, make sure you don’t have it equipped. Approach Kelvin, hold E, select “Take Item,” and press D to hand it over. The result is easily one of his best outfit combinations, the Leather Jacket and sunglasses make him look ready for business.
The second Leather Jacket location is inside the Rebreather Cave on the northern coast. This one’s riskier, but it’s worth the trip if you want to double up or missed the first. Bring the Tactical Axe to break open the cave entrance and prepare to face blind mutants and a Fingers along the way.
Stick to the right-hand path when the tunnel splits. You’ll find the Leather Jacket and Stun Gun near a hanging body, while the Rebreather is deeper inside the cave.
Stat-wise, the Leather Jacket offers Low-Moderate Warmth, Low-Moderate Comfort, and Moderate Water Resistance, giving you balanced protection for mixed weather and travel conditions.
It’s not ideal for snow regions or heat extremes, but it works perfectly for general exploration.
For me, the Leather Jacket is a go-to item when I’m roaming the midlands or building bases near rivers and coasts. It lets you stay comfortable through rain without freezing up, and the style bonus doesn’t hurt either.
Equip it when you need flexibility, or give it to Kelvin to keep him looking sharp while he works.
