Key Highlights:

  • Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was revealed at The Game Awards.
  • Casey Hudson returns to Star Wars as director at new studio Arcanaut.
  • No gameplay or release window confirmed yet.

A brand-new Star Wars game set in the Old Republic era has been officially revealed, and it was not the announcement many fans were expecting. Instead of long-awaited news on the Knights of the Old Republic remake, The Game Awards closed the door on speculation by unveiling Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a narrative-driven action RPG led by Casey Hudson.

The reveal came with a short cinematic teaser and very few concrete details, but the name alone carries serious weight. Any return to the Old Republic is going to draw attention, and this one arrives with a familiar creative lead attached.

Casey Hudson Returns to Star Wars

One of the most significant parts of the announcement is the confirmation that Casey Hudson is directing the project. Hudson previously led the original Knights of the Old Republic and went on to shape the Mass Effect trilogy, making his return to Star Wars hard to ignore.

This time, Hudson is working through Arcanaut Studios, a new developer he co-founded, in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. According to Hudson, Fate of the Old Republic is designed to deliver the same core pillars that defined KOTOR, including strong player choice, cinematic storytelling, and meaningful consequences tied to the light and dark sides of the Force.

From what has been shared, this is not a sequel or direct continuation of KOTOR. Instead, it is a new story set near the end of the Old Republic era, thousands of years before the Skywalker saga.

What We Know So Far

Right now, details are intentionally light. The project is confirmed as a single-player, narrative-driven action role-playing game where players step into the role of a Force user during the final days of the Old Republic. Player choice is expected to sit at the heart of progression, with decisions shaping the journey toward the light or dark side of the Force. Arcanaut Studios is developing the game in partnership with Lucasfilm Games.

There is no gameplay shown, no platforms announced, and no release window. Based on the language used by Hudson and Lucasfilm Games, this project is still early in development.

Going into The Game Awards, most expectations were centred on either Star Wars Jedi 3 or an update on the troubled KOTOR remake, which was first announced back in 2021 and later shifted to Saber Interactive after reported development issues.

Instead, Fate of the Old Republic represents something cleaner. A fresh start, a new studio, and a familiar creative lead with deep experience in both Star Wars and RPG storytelling. I actually think this approach makes more sense than forcing updates on a remake that has struggled to re-emerge.

That said, this announcement does not mean the KOTOR remake is cancelled. If anything, it finally gives Star Wars RPG fans something tangible to focus on while that project remains quiet.

As things stand, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is one to watch rather than analyse to death. More details are promised in the future, but its mere existence already marks one of the most interesting Star Wars game reveals in years.
