Cloud Imperium Games has launched Star Citizen Alpha 4.82, bringing the annual Alien Week celebration alongside two new alien-inspired spacecraft and a lengthy list of fixes aimed at improving stability following Alpha 4.8’s troubled rollout.
Headlining the update are the Gatac Railen and the Gatac Tyilui, both sharing the same basic chassis. The Railen serves as a dedicated cargo hauler, while the Tyilui acts as a snub carrier capable of transporting four small fighters that lack their own quantum drives. The unusual design has been compared to a spacefaring wasp nest, with anti-gravity bays allowing the carrier to deploy and recover fighters.

As detailed on the official website, Alien Week also includes community events and Arena Commander challenges, with players able to earn rewards such as the Glaive spacecraft.
Alongside the new ships, Alpha 4.82 addresses a wide range of issues introduced by previous updates.

Elsewhere, Cloud Imperium used its latest Inside Star Citizen episode to discuss the technical difficulties that have plagued Alpha 4.8. Developers admitted that what began as a fix for the Idris expanded into a much larger problem that affected the wider build, forcing much of the patch cycle into what the team described as “firefighting.”
The studio also revealed that internal discussions are underway regarding Alpha 4.9. Rather than repeating recent mistakes, developers are considering whether to delay the update or remove certain features to ensure greater stability.
Several features are currently planned for Alpha 4.9, including new Nine Tails armour, additional hairstyles, a close-quarters battle rifle and dedicated storage frames for ship ordnance.
For me, Alpha 4.82 feels more important for what it says about Star Citizen’s development than for the new ships themselves. I think Cloud Imperium openly acknowledging the problems surrounding Alpha 4.8 and discussing changes to its release schedule is a positive sign. After years of increasingly ambitious updates, stability and reliability may be just as important to the game’s future as adding more content.
Star Citizen remains in alpha and continues to be funded through crowdfunding, with the project recently surpassing $1 billion in total funding. Meanwhile, Squadron 42, the single-player campaign starring actors including Mark Hamill, Henry Cavill and Gary Oldman, is currently targeting a 2026 release window.
