  • 12-year partnership between IOC and Saudi NOC for regular Olympic Esports Games.
  • Event aims to engage younger audiences and promote gender equality in esports.

In a groundbreaking move that marks a new era for both the Olympic movement and the world of competitive gaming, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced a partnership with the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Saudi Arabia to host the first-ever Olympic Esports Games in 2025.

This historic decision, unveiled today, follows the IOC Executive Board’s recent establishment of the Olympic Esports Games and comes on the heels of a successful Olympic Esports Series trial in 2023 last year.

The shocking but positive announcement signals a significant shift in the Olympic landscape, embracing the digital age and recognising the growing global importance of esports.

IOC President Thomas Bach emphasised the strategic nature of this partnership, stating:

“We are very fortunate to be able to work with the Saudi NOC on the Olympic Esports Games, because it has great – if not unique – expertise in the field of esports with all its stakeholders.”

A 12-Year Commitment to Digital Competition

The collaboration between the IOC and Saudi Arabia’s NOC is not a one-off event but a long-term commitment.

The partnership spans an impressive 12 years, during which Olympic Esports Games will be held regularly.

This extended timeframe underscores the IOC’s dedication to integrating esports into the Olympic framework and highlights Saudi Arabia’s ambition to position itself as a global hub for digital sports.

HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal, Minister of Sport and President of the Saudi Arabian Olympic and Paralympic Committee, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership:

“Saudi Arabia is hugely excited by the prospect of partnering with the IOC and helping to welcome a completely new era for international sport.” He added, “We believe that to take part in the Olympic Games is one of the greatest honours any athlete can achieve. And we are proud to support the writing of a new chapter in Olympic history that has the potential to inspire new dreams and new ambitions for literally millions of athletes around the world.”

Saudi Arabia: A Rising Esports Powerhouse

The choice of Saudi Arabia as the inaugural host is not coincidental.

The Kingdom has witnessed explosive growth in its gaming and esports sectors in recent years, aligning with its Vision 2030 initiative to diversify the economy and develop public service sectors, including sports and entertainment.

In the world of Sport, the country has welcomed stars such as Heavyweight Boxing champions Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk in recent years. Whilst hosting events for Formula One, music concerts and much more.

The Vision 2030 initiative shows no sign of slowing down with this exciting news today too.

Key statistics highlight this growth:

  • Over 23 million gamers in Saudi Arabia, representing about 67% of the population
  • Nearly half of the Kingdom’s gamers are female
  • 100 pro esports players are pursuing full-time careers in the country

Prince Abdulaziz emphasised the country’s readiness for this monumental task:

“We are a youthful nation, with over 23 million gamers, embracing the future with new thinking and partnerships. Supported by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, our Kingdom has become a global hub for professional esports.”

A significant focus of the Olympic Esports Games will be on promoting gender equality within the community.

This commitment reflects broader changes in Saudi Arabia’s sporting landscape. The country has seen rapid growth in women’s sports participation, with over 330,000 registered female athletes and nearly 40 women’s national teams now competing internationally.

While specific details about the inaugural event are yet to be finalised, the IOC and Saudi NOC have outlined several key areas of focus:

  1. Game Selection: The IOC will prioritise working with International Federations already engaged in e-versions of their sports. Rumoured titles for inclusion are League of Legends, Street Fighter, and Rocket League, though official confirmation is pending.
  2. Venue and Timing: Work will soon begin on selecting a specific city and venue within Saudi Arabia, as well as determining the precise timing of the event.
  3. Qualification Process: A system for qualifying players for the Olympic Esports Games will be developed, ensuring a fair and competitive selection process.
  4. Organisational Structure: The IOC will create a new dedicated structure within its organisation for the Esports Games, separate from the traditional Olympic Games model.
  5. Financial Model: Recognising the unique nature of esports, the IOC will develop a different approach to financing and organising these Games compared to traditional Olympic events.

A New Chapter in Olympic History

The introduction of the Olympic Esports Games represents a significant milestone in the evolution of both the Olympic movement and competitive gaming.

It reflects the IOC’s recognition of the growing global importance of esports and its potential to engage younger audiences.

As the world eagerly anticipates the inaugural Olympic Esports Games in 2025, the partnership between the IOC and Saudi Arabia promises to usher in a new era of digital competition on the world’s most prestigious sporting stage.

With its blend of cutting-edge technology, global participation, and Olympic prestige, the event is poised to inspire a new generation of athletes and redefine the boundaries of international sport.
