Key Highlights:
- Ed Boon teases possible Mortal Kombat: Deception remaster.
- Fans express interest in return of Konquest mode.
- Speculation about future Mortal Kombat storylines.
Ed Boon, the creator and director of the Mortal Kombat series, has once again set the gaming community abuzz with cryptic messages about the franchise’s future.
Known for his close relationship with the MK fanbase, Boon recently shared an ambiguous post on X (formerly Twitter) that has sparked speculation about a potential return to the 3D Era of Mortal Kombat.
The post in question addressed the 20th anniversary of Mortal Kombat: Deception, with Boon reflecting:
“How have 20 years passed? Bring it back?”
This exciting statement has led to two primary theories among fans. The first is the possibility of a remastered version of MK Deception, potentially alongside other 3D Era titles such as Armageddon and Deadly Alliance.
The second theory suggests that the next Mortal Kombat game might heavily feature Dragon King Onaga, absent from the series for two decades.
The idea of a Deception remaster has garnered significant enthusiasm from fans. The game’s beloved features, including MK Chess, Puzzle Kombat, and the Shujinko Konquest mode, remain fondly remembered for their innovative gameplay and wealth of easter eggs.
When released in 2004, Deception was praised for these unique modes, distinguishing it from competitors in the fighting game genre by offering additional content outside of traditional one-on-one combat.
The Konquest mode, in particular, has been a topic of discussion, with Boon specifically asking fans if they’d like to see its return.
Konquest mode, which allowed players to control the new character Shujinko and explore a semi-open world, was a unique addition to the Mortal Kombat formula.
Its RPG-like structure, with story-driven quests and character interactions, was ahead of its time for fighting games, and many fans credit it with providing a more immersive MK experience.
Despite some technical limitations, it quickly became a fan favourite due to its fresh approach to storytelling within the MK universe.
The mode hasn’t been seen since Deception, with only the Krypt in Mortal Kombat 11 offering a somewhat similar experience.
Though, The Krypt, while interactive, focuses more on unlockables and mini-games, lacking the depth and narrative focus that Konquest mode offered.
The overwhelming majority of responses to Boon’s query have been in favour of Konquest‘s return, with many fans citing it as one of their favourite modes in the series’ history.
However, some voices in the community have expressed a preference for a revival of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks instead.
Shaolin Monks, released a year later in 2005, was another 3D-era spin-off that combined action-adventure elements with Mortal Kombat gameplay, and it remains one of the most requested games for a remaster or sequel.
Future Storylines and Onaga’s Potential Return
Regarding the franchise’s future storyline, some fans speculate that we might see a more prominent version of Dragon King Onaga invading all timelines.
This theory gains traction following the multiverse story in Mortal Kombat 1, which some found disappointing for its handling of the Deadly Alliance and Onaga‘s potential return.
It’s worth noting that Boon has a history of playfully interacting with fans and gauging interest in various ideas.
While these social media posts generate excitement, they don’t necessarily guarantee future content.
Boon has previously hinted at content that never materialised, such as the potential inclusion of horror icons like Michael Myers in the MK series.
Given the lengthy development cycles of modern games, any potential Deception remaster or new entry featuring Konquest mode would likely be quite far off.
