Key Highlights:

  • Rainbow Six Siege X brings a major free-to-play option with a limited roster and modes.
  • A brand-new 6v6 mode, Dual Front, introduces strategic base capture gameplay.
  • Visual, audio, and gameplay overhauls modernise Siege for the next decade.

Ubisoft is setting the stage for the biggest shift in Rainbow Six Siege history with the introduction of Siege X. As the game enters its tenth year, this overhaul is designed to redefine its future. With a free-to-play model, a new competitive mode, and major gameplay refinementsSiege X signals a new era for the tactical shooter.

The most immediate change is the Free Access tier, allowing new players to experience the game without an upfront cost.

However, this version comes with limitations. At launch, Free Access players will start with 10 Operators and can unlock an additional 16 through progression, leaving much of the full roster behind a paywall.

Similarly, access to Ranked play and the Siege Cup is locked behind premium access, maintaining a competitive environment for dedicated players.

Despite these restrictions, the move mirrors the success of free-to-play shooters like Call of Duty: Warzone and Overwatch 2, aiming to bring a fresh wave of players into the Siege ecosystem.

One of the most significant additions arriving with Siege X is Dual Front, the first permanent new mode since the game’s release.

This 6v6 tactical battle introduces two mirrored bases, each containing three sectors that teams must capture while defending their own.

The final objective, a prototype hidden within the third sector—becomes the focal point, as attackers must destroy it to secure victory.

Adding a dynamic twist, a neutral zone in the centre introduces rotating seasonal objectives, such as hostage extractions, offering teams a high-risk, high-reward incentive mid-match.

District, a new map designed specifically for Dual Front, combines indoor and outdoor environments, with a rotating Operator pool ensuring a fresh experience each season.

This shift to a larger player count and strategic base control introduces Siege to a new level of tactical gameplay, moving beyond its traditional 5v5 close-quarters combat.

It could broaden the game’s appeal, attracting fans of large-scale objective-based shooters like Battlefield while maintaining the tactical precision R6 Siege is known for.

Comprehensive Gameplay Refinements And Visual Enhancements

Beyond the Free Access shift and Dual FrontSiege X brings sweeping refinements to the core game.

Visual enhancements include a rebuilt lighting engine that modernises classic maps like Clubhouse, Chalet, and Bank, improving readability and strategic clarity.

Ubisoft plans to update three additional maps every season, keeping the game visually fresh. The new system also introduces 4K textures for PC players, enhancing environmental detail.

Gameplay mechanics have also seen key improvements. The rappel system now allows smoother corner navigation and sprinting, creating a more fluid experience when traversing the game’s vertical spaces.

Destructible objects, such as fire extinguishers that create smoke clouds and gas pipes that trigger explosions, add new layers of tactical depth.

Metal detectors are now fully functional, forcing players to decide whether to disable, avoid, or use them to their advantage.

Animation updates ensure a seamless transition between actions, preventing movement penalties when vaulting objects at full sprint.

Meanwhile, first-person shadows add a new layer of realism, your position can now be given away by light sources casting your silhouette on the floor.

Audio improvements enhance spatial awarenessDirectional sound makes it easier to pinpoint enemy movement, whether they’re above, below, or to the side.

This ties into a newly implemented Communication Wheel, similar to Apex Legends, allowing players to mark points of interest quickly without voice chat.

With such fundamental changes, Ubisoft is launching a closed beta to allow players to test these new features.

Running from March 13th to March 19th, access is granted through Twitch drops, encouraging players to tune into participating streams.

Siege X is a bold step forward, marking a new decade for Rainbow Six Siege while preserving its tactical roots.

The Free Access model, Dual Front, and extensive gameplay refinements could usher in a fresh wave of players, ensuring that the FPS remains a key player in the competitive shooter scene for years to come.
