Key Highlights:
- Drink directly from rivers, streams, or ponds by crouching at the edge with empty hands.
- Craft a flask using the 3D printer or build a rain catcher for portable or passive water storage.
- Boiling river water in a cooking pot over a fire ensures safe hydration in contaminated zones.

In Sons of the Forest, staying hydrated is just as important as avoiding enemies or gathering supplies.
Water not only replenishes your thirst meter but also contributes to overall stamina and survival efficiency.
Fortunately, there are multiple ways to find, purify, and carry water across the island – ranging from primitive to advanced solutions. Here’s every method to stay hydrated in Sons of the Forest.
How to Drink Water from Natural Sources
The fastest and most direct way to hydrate is by drinking straight from freshwater sources like rivers, streams, and ponds.
These are scattered across the island and are visible via your GPS map (press M and zoom with the middle mouse button). Once you reach a suitable source:
- Approach a shallow edge to avoid triggering the swimming animation
- Drop anything you’re holding (press G)
- Crouch or look down at the water until the Interact (E) prompt appears
- Hold to drink and refill around half of your thirst bar
Quick Tip: Avoid drinking from saltwater near the coastline, this will not hydrate you and will definitely harm your health.
Portable Water: Crafting a Flask with the 3D Printer
While surface water is easy to access, you’ll often find yourself inland or in combat zones without a stream nearby.
In such cases, a flask becomes invaluable. To craft one, locate the underground 3D printer found inside a bunker on the west side of the map, near a green pulsing GPS point of interest, marked by an abandoned golf buggy at the entrance. If you want exact details on location, check out our SOTF Keycards guide that will take you through it step-by-step.
Inside the bunker:
- Use the printer to craft a Flask for 100ml of printer resin
- Resins are scattered nearby or in crates
- Once printed, visit any clean water source and press E to fill the flask
- Stored water can then be consumed directly from your inventory
Passive Collection: How to Build a Rain Catcher
When you establish a base, having a reliable source of clean water becomes essential. A Rain Catcher provides a long-term solution, especially during rainy seasons. Here’s what you’ll need:
| Item | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Sticks | 12 |
| Turtle Shell | 1 |
Sticks can be harvested around trees. For the turtle shell, head to coastal regions and harvest one from a large sea turtle (not snapping turtles).
Once built, place the rain catcher outside and it will passively collect water during rainfall, ready for consumption at any time.
How to Boil Water with a Cooking Pot in SOTF
If you’re concerned about contamination or want a traditional purification method, boiling water is the way to go. Cooking pots can be found in bunkers and enemy camps almost everywhere across the map in SOTF. To boil:
- Collect water from a stream using the pot
- Place it over a campfire
- Wait for it to boil, then interact to consume clean, safe water
Note: You will know when it has completely boiled and eliminated any contaminated water by the lid flying off.
This method is ideal for purifying river water in zones where drinking straight may pose risks.
Bonus Tip: Emergency Hydration Using Plants
In a pinch, you can consume Yarrow (white flowers) or Salmonberries.
These edible plants provide a minor hydration boost and are widely available across the island, serving as temporary solutions when water sources are out of reach.
Water is everywhere in Sons of the Forest, but managing it smartly is what ensures survival. Knowing the best option for the moment can make all the difference.
