Sons of the Forest Enemies: Full List and How to Beat Them

Guide on strategies to defeat enemies in the game "Sons of the Forest."

Key Highlights:

  • Sons of The Forest Enemies Guide: full list, behaviours, and the best counters.
  • Cannibals: ranks and group tactics; masks can prevent aggro if used early.
  • Mutants and demons: cave-heavy threats; explosives, Shotgun, Cross, and Golden Armour secure wins.

Sons of the Forest throws mixed threats at you from day one: territorial cannibal tribes above ground and brutal mutants in the cave network. Enemy AI reacts to your actions, so scouting, picking fights wisely, and using the right tools matter more than raw aggression.

Below is every notable enemy, what it does, and the cleanest way to beat it. You can also use the quick links to navigate to the enemy you’re currently stuck on, or view the full list to get acquainted with them.

Cannibals (surface threats, adaptable AI)

General tips

  • Masks: a red mask can calm weaker cannibals if they aren’t already hostile; golden mask-wearers often ignore it. Put the mask on before they aggro.
  • Night pressure: expect painted war parties at night, set traps and lighting near your base.
  • Priority targets: remove leaders (gold or red masks, brutes/blazing) to break a group’s nerve.

Muddy Cannibals

Skittish scouts that stalk on all fours, hide in bushes, and report back to camps. Beat them: quick ranged taps (Pistol/Crossbow). If they flee, finish the job or expect a larger group later.

Common Cannibals (male/female)

Foot soldiers that surround and feint. Females often mourn or scavenge rather than initiate. Beat them: block-then-counter with a melee headshot; strip armour first, then decapitate or shoot.

Painted Cannibals (night raiders)

Turn up in packs, wake you from sleep, and test base defences. Beat them: perimeter traps, electric fencing, and a flashlight + shotgun combo.

Brute Cannibals (tribal enforcers)

Huge, club-wielding, fast for their size; can kick you off your feet and smash defences. Beat them: Shotgun to stop charges, or explosives. Don’t trade, kite and fire.

Titan Cannibals (red “wrecking balls”)

Weaponless chargers that belly-flop and wreck structures. Often in hunting parties. Beat them: chest shots with Pistol/Shotgun; keep moving, punish recovery.

Blazing Cannibals (“Frank”)

Leaders that set themselves alight from Day ~10; no shows in rain/snow. Beat them: keep distance; ranged only to avoid burn damage.

Frenzied Cannibals

Fast, armoured, high damage, partial chip through parries; can’t be knocked down or outrun. Beat them: Shotgun/Crossbow at range; Stun Baton to create a punish window if you must go melee.

Charging Cannibals (antler helms)

Ram attacks that floor you; often two per tribe. Beat them: shoot mid-sprint or bait them through your traps.

Cannibal Assassin (acrobatic female)

Rolls, multi-strings, Wolverine-style claws, relentless pressure. Beat her: hold your nerve, parry, step back, then finish with ranged.

Spearmen (ranged variants)

Carry up to three spears before swapping to melee. Beat them: break line of sight or close quickly; return fire with bow/pistol.

Golden-Mask Leaders

Status over power, often paired with brutes. Beat them: drop the entourage first; leaders lose their edge alone.

Mutants (cave apex threats, late-game surface spawns)

General tips

  • Bring light, meds, and explosives underground.
  • Shotgun and Crossbow are reliable finishers.
  • Special counters: Cross burns demons; Golden Armour reduces demon damage (doesn’t help vs cannibals).

Puffy Mutant (incl. Spotty & Luminescent)

Blind, track by sound, roam in packs. Spotty/luminescent variants are tougher. Beat them: silent Crossbow headshots; for glow variants, shift to explosives or Shotgun.

Fingers

Torso splits into a ring of “fingers”; body-slam rushes deal huge damage. Beat it: aim for legs to slow; two Shotgun blasts or a Molotov finishes the job.

Twins

Two fused bodies; low crawl, ambush, strike from odd angles. Beat them: keep distance; ensure both halves take damage, finish with Crossbow/Shotgun.

Mutant Babies

Swarms that fling themselves as projectiles. Beat them: Modern Axe sweeps; a single grenade clears a room.

Caterpillar (Worm)

Two-headed, slinky motion, rapid gap-closing; shreds bases. Beat it: explosives or Shotgun, don’t try to kite in tight spaces.

Sluggy

Mass blocks cave paths; not actively hostile. Beat it: grenade or time bomb to proceed.

Armsy (post-game)

Lumbering mass of arms; charges and flails. Beat it: explosives or sustained gunfire; punish after whiffs.

Legsy (post-game)

Hands for feet; leaps from ceilings, brutal burst damage. Beat it: keep eyes up; lure into traps or blast mid-pounce.

Creepy Virginia (late-game spawn)

The Six-legged Virginia is agile, heavy jump attack; likely linked to mutant babies. Beat her: Crossbow/bullets at range; if armoured, Chainsaw/Katana during stagger.

Demon (hell caves)

Spidery movement, long reach swipes; late-game areas. Beat them: Cross to ignite and kill; Golden Armour mitigates damage. Ranged fire if you’re out of faith.

Demon Boss (giant variant)

Clings to ceilings, leaps, massive swipes. Beat it: shoot while it’s above; keep moving, avoid ground slams; Cross helps but needs many hits.

Edward & Barbara Puffton (mid-game duo)

Puffy-like bosses in Food & Dining bunker; hit hard, move fast, come with adds. Beat them: clear minions, then focus fire; Shotgun/Crossbow to stagger.

Jianyu Zhang (final boss)

Huge mutant, throws rocks, swings wreckage, spawns other mutantsBeat it: explosives and sustained gunfire; keep mobile, clear adds quickly, punish after charges.

Aquatic Threats

Sharks

Great whites in the sea and some underwater caves; poor visibility makes them nasty surprises. Beat them: avoid open-water swims; if trapped, surface bait then sprint for ladders/rafts and shoot from safety.

(Orcas also patrol the coast but are non-hostile.)

Practical Loadouts by Phase

  • Early game: Spear/Bow + Bone Armour. Avoid caves at night; use red mask to loot camps without fights.
  • Mid game: Pistol/Crossbow, Bombs, Creepy Armour. Start clearing key caves methodically.
  • Late game: Shotgun, lots of explosives, CrossGolden Armour for demon zones. Keep traps around base to counter night raids and titans.

Master spacing on the surface and commit to ruthless burst damage underground. Use masks to prevent fights, not to end them; use the Cross where faith is stronger than gunpowder. With the right reads, every enemy on the island becomes predictable and beatable.
