How to Find the Cross in Sons of the Forest Southwest Cave

Key Highlights:

  • The Cross is hidden in a southwest cave, near one of the spawn routes by the Rope Gun cave.
  • It can repel mutants and burns Demon mutants, vital for the late-game Armed Door section.
  • The cave also holds valuable loot including ammo, meds, and wires.

The Cross is one of the stranger items in Sons of the Forest, and while it might not look like much early on, it plays a crucial role against certain enemies.

At first, you’ll rely on axes, bows, and firearms to deal with cannibals and mutants, but supernatural threats require a different answer. That’s where the Cross comes in. It can frighten weaker cave mutants and outright burn Demon mutants, which appear in the late game. If you don’t collect it early, you’ll regret it once you reach the Armed Door.

The Cross Cave is found on the southwest side of the island. You’ll know you’re close when you see a pulsating green GPS marker in the area.

The cave itself is south of that marker, near a circular lake with rivers branching from it. If you spawn at the mountain, river, or beach, you can reach the cave early, and you don’t technically need any extra gear to get in. Still, I recommend carrying the Flashlight or Pistol because the cave is dark and crawling with mutants.

Once inside, follow the path until you reach a flooded chamber with a raised ledge. It’s almost pitch black, so bring flares to light the room. Towards the back, you’ll notice a bright floodlight, and on the wall behind it, the Cross casts a clear shadow. That’s your landmark. Stick to the right-hand wall to make navigation easier and avoid drawing too much attention.

Enemies in this cave are mostly blind mutants. They rely heavily on sound, so crouching does help a little, but don’t expect to sneak through perfectly. If they close in, explosives like Time Bombs or Grenades can clear groups quickly, but be mindful of supplies.

You’ll also find a surprising amount of loot here – ammo, meds, and wires are scattered around, so take the time to sweep the area.

Grab the Cross from the back of the room and it will go into your inventory, replacing whatever weapon you were holding. You can leave the way you came or continue deeper to eventually reach the Zipline Rope Gun.

Later in the game, the Cross becomes one of the most important tools in your arsenal. In the Armed Door section, it forces back Demons and sets them ablaze, giving you breathing room without wasting ammo. You can even upgrade it through Solafite crafting, which boosts its damage further.

It’s easy to miss the Cross if you don’t know where to look, but securing it early not only gives you access to extra loot, it also ensures you’re prepared for the game’s toughest enemies.
