Key Highlights:

  • Amazon Game Studios and Crystal Dynamics announced two new Tomb Raider games at The Game Awards 2025.
  • Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis launches in 2026 as a reimagined take on Lara Croft’s first adventure.
  • Tomb Raider: Catalyst follows in 2027 with an all-new story set in Northern India.

Lara Croft is officially back in a big way. Amazon Game Studios and Crystal Dynamics revealed not one, but two new Tomb Raider games during The Game Awards 2025, confirming plans to both revisit the series’ roots and push it forward with a brand-new adventure.

The first of the two titles, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, is a modern reimagining of Lara Croft’s original 1996 debut. Developed by Crystal Dynamics in partnership with Flying Wild Hog, the game rebuilds the classic experience using Unreal Engine 5, combining updated visuals, modern design sensibilities, and new surprises while preserving the tone and structure that defined the original. Players will once again hunt the scattered pieces of the Scion, navigating deadly traps, hostile wildlife, and lost locations. Legacy of Atlantis is set to launch in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The second announcement, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, represents the future of the franchise. In development since 2022, Catalyst is described as the largest Tomb Raider game to date and sends Lara to Northern India, where ancient secrets resurface after a major cataclysm. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the game promises a collision of past and present as Lara faces rival forces also seeking these newly uncovered relics. Catalyst is scheduled for release in 2027, with platforms expected to align with current-generation systems.

What stood out immediately is how closely Catalyst aligns with earlier reporting around the direction of the next Tomb Raider. Back in 2024, I covered growing indications that the next mainline entry would take Lara to India in a far more expansive, open-ended adventure, driven by large-scale traversal and competing treasure hunters. Seeing Catalyst now officially confirmed in that setting suggests those early details were pointing in the right direction, even if Amazon and Crystal Dynamics are still keeping the finer gameplay systems under wraps.

Both games will feature Lara Croft portrayed by Alix Wilton Regan, whose previous work includes Dragon Age: Inquisition, Cyberpunk 2077, and Mass Effect 3. Her performance is positioned as a unifying thread between the reimagined past and Lara’s next evolution, reinforcing a confident, capable version of the character that longtime fans will recognise.

All this after we were treated to the 1-2-3 Remastered and 4-5-6 Remastered collections recently.

With two games announced, a television adaptation also in development, and Amazon clearly investing heavily in the franchise, Tomb Raider looks poised for its most significant revival in years.

Legacy of Atlantis will test how well the series’ origins translate to modern hardware, while Catalyst appears set to define where Lara Croft goes next.
