Key Highlights:

  • Sega reboots Crazy Taxi as a massive multiplayer driving game.
  • Open-world title set on the US West Coast.
  • Blends classic gameplay with modern features.
  • Developed by Sega Sapporo using Unreal Engine.

In an exciting move, Sega has lifted the curtain on its plans for the highly anticipated Crazy Taxi reboot, revealing a project far more ambitious than fans might have expected.

The iconic arcade-turned-console franchise is set to return as a “massively multiplayer driving game,” signalling a significant evolution for the series.

The revelation came through a recently released recruitment video from Sega Sapporo, the studio spearheading the development of this AAA title.

Kenji Kanno, producer of the reboot and director of the original Crazy Taxi, shared insights into the project alongside other team members.

“We’re adapting the core gameplay of Crazy Taxi into a world where multiple players can interact simultaneously,” Kanno explained.

This marks a dramatic shift from the series’ traditionally single-player focus, potentially transforming the frantic taxi-driving experience into a shared, persistent world.

The game’s setting draws inspiration from the West Coast of the United States, with developers describing the map as “theme park-like.”

This suggests a vibrant, exaggerated urban playground that could provide the perfect backdrop for the series’ trademark over-the-top driving antics.

Sega Sapporo, a relatively new studio established in 2021, is utilising Unreal Engine to bring this vision to life. Job listings on Sega’s website further corroborate the game’s scope, referring to it as a “new major online title” with an open world.

While the shift to a multiplayer format is significant, Kanno assures fans that the team aims to maintain the classic Crazy Taxi style.

The core loop of picking up passengers and racing against the clock to reach destinations will likely remain, albeit now in a shared environment with other players.

Hints at Additional Gameplay Modes in the Crazy Taxi Reboot

Interestingly, one image from the recruitment video showed a player behind the wheel of a police car, hinting at potential new gameplay modes or roles within the game world.

This could indicate a level of variety and player choice not seen in previous Crazy Taxi titles. There seems to be a correlation with the Need For Speed series in regards to these police cars, which is a trademark of the racing title.

The announcement aligns with recent leaks suggesting that the Crazy Taxi reboot would be a live service game.

These unconfirmed reports also mention the possibility of a separate, more traditional single-player focused remake launching before the multiplayer reboot.

Sega’s commitment to reviving its classic franchises was evident at The Game Awards 2023, where the company announced new entries in the Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage series alongside Crazy Taxi.

However, the taxi-driving franchise seems to be receiving the most radical overhaul of the bunch.

As of now, Sega has not announced a release date for the Crazy Taxi reboot. The scope of the project suggests that fans may need to be patient as the development team works to realise this ambitious vision.

The transformation of Crazy Taxi into a massively multiplayer experience raises intriguing questions about how the franchise’s frenetic gameplay will translate to a shared world.

Will players compete for fares, or will there be cooperative elements? How will the scoring system adapt to a persistent online environment?

As more details emerge, it’s clear that Sega is betting big on this reimagining of their arcade-turned-console racer.

Whether this bold new direction will resonate with long-time fans and attract new players remains to be seen, but it certainly promises to be one of the most interesting evolutions of a classic gaming franchise in recent memory.
