A new run of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games was confirmed on 7 February 2013 after Activision and Nickelodeon signed a worldwide multi-year publishing agreement.
The deal gave Activision global rights to develop and publish interactive games based on Nickelodeon’s CG animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, which had launched the previous year.
At least three titles were planned under the agreement, with the first scheduled to arrive during summer 2013. No game names, platforms or developers had been confirmed when the partnership was announced.
Nickelodeon said Activision had been chosen as its global video game partner because the publisher could create games that reflected the tone and action of the animated series.
Activision also acknowledged the long-running fanbase surrounding the Turtles, saying it intended to respect the franchise while creating new interactive interpretations of Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo.
The first project revealed from the agreement arrived several months later when Nickelodeon and Activision announced a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles side-scrolling brawler for Xbox 360, Wii and Nintendo 3DS, with an October 2013 release planned.
The Turtles would continue appearing in new games long after Activision’s deal ended, with later releases taking the franchise in completely different directions while keeping Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo at the centre.
