Shenmue Diehards Take to Times Square in Daring Plea for Sequel
Dedicated fans of the cult classic Shenmue series are going to incredible lengths to get developers’ attention for a highly-anticipated Shenmue 4! Their bold campaign included renting a massive billboard right in New York City’s iconic Times Square.
On June 4th, 2024, the prominent Shenmue fan site Shenmue Dojo launched their daring awareness campaign with a simple but powerful message: “Let’s Get Shenmue 4”.
As part of the push, they paid to have a 15-second advertisement broadcast on one of Times Square’s legendary brilliant billboards in NY.
The ad featured beloved characters from the iconic cult-classic games surrounding the #LetsGetShenmue4 hashtag that fans are rallying behind on social media. Their colossal electronic petition immediately caught fire, sending “Shenmue” trending on X/Twitter.
An Impassioned Plea to Developers
Through their awareness blitz, Shenmue Dojo hopes to connect directly with Shenmue’s creator Yu Suzuki and his independent studio YsNet.
Their goal? To find Suzuki a publishing partner willing to fund production of the long-awaited Shenmue 4.
In a message on their official site, the campaigners declared their unwavering determination: “We will continue to strive until Shenmue 4 is a reality. Thank you to everyone that helped spread the word – together, we can make our voices heard!”
From a humble 1999 Dreamcast cult classic to a record-shattering Kickstarter phenomenon with Shenmue 3 in 2015, this underdog franchise has long been propelled by its passionately loyal fanbase.
Making Shenmue Accessible for New Fans For his part, Suzuki has expressed keen interest in developing a latest entry in the series – but only if he can find the right partner to bring his distinct vision to life properly.
In a 2023 interview with IGN, the famed developer revealed his desire to make the next Shenmue more newcomer-friendly instead of requiring intimate prior knowledge. Some of his ideas include:
- Integrating a story digest into the main game instead of separating it
- Implementing playable flashbacks to organically convey key past events
- Creating an optional prequel called Shenmue Zero exploring teenage protagonist Ryo’s origins
“I want Shenmue 4 to be enjoyable for newcomers,” Suzuki stated. “It would be great if players could naturally learn about previous events just by playing the game.”
With such an ambitious new direction mapped out, all Suzuki needs now is a publishing partner brave enough to bankroll his grandiose vision. Perhaps the deafening roar of the #LetsGetShenmue4 campaign from loyal fans will finally open the right doors!
