The popular online game World of Warcraft is giving some of its players a free day of game time. This comes after problems with a big update that left many unable to play. Let’s dive into what happened and what it means for players.
The Pre-Expansion Update
On July 23rd, World of Warcraft released a big update called Patch 11.0. This update is preparing the game for its upcoming expansion, “The War Within”. It’s meant to add new features and get everything ready for the expansion’s launch.
Some of the new things in this update include:
- A new login screen
- Hero Talents, which give players new ways to make their characters stronger
- Warbands, a feature that lets players manage their different characters more easily
- Cross-realm trading, allowing players to trade items between their characters on different game servers
These changes sound exciting, but the update didn’t go as smoothly as the game’s creators, Blizzard, had hoped.
The maintenance for Patch 11.0 took more than half a day, about 14 hours to be exact! During this time, players in North America, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand couldn’t log in to play the MMORPG.
Blizzard’s Response
Blizzard knows that players were upset about not being able to play for so long. To make up for this, they’re doing something generous for the affected players.
They posted a new blog post on the official site, stating if you’re a WOW player in North America, Latin America, Australia, or New Zealand, and your subscription was active on 23 July, you’ll get an extra day of game time for free.
This means you’ll be able to play for one more day than you originally paid for.
Blizzard says they’ll add this free day to players’ accounts around August 15th. If you want to check how much game time you have, you can look at your Battle.net account.
Ongoing Issues
Even after the long maintenance, not everything in the update is working perfectly. Blizzard had to turn off some of the new features because they were causing problems:
- Cross-realm trading: This new feature was supposed to let players trade items between their characters on different servers. But it was causing the game to freeze up for some players, so Blizzard had to disable it for now.
- Warband Bank: This is part of the new Warbands feature. It was meant to let players share items and money between their characters. But there was a bug causing players to lose their in-game money when they tried to use it, so Blizzard turned it off temporarily.
The developers haven’t said exactly when these features will be working again. They’ve told players that fixing these issues is their top priority, especially with the full expansion launch coming up soon.
What This Means for Players
If you’re a World of Warcraft player, or thinking about getting into the game, here’s what you need to know:
- Free Game Time: If you’re in one of the affected regions and your subscription was active on 23 July, you’ll get a free day of game time. You don’t need to do anything – Blizzard will add it to your account automatically.
- Patience Required: Some of the new features aren’t working yet. Blizzard is working on fixing them, but it might take some time.
- Expansion Launch: The full expansion, “The War Within”, is still set to launch soon. Early Access starts on August 22nd, with the global launch on August 26th, 2024.
The launch of WOW’s pre-expansion update didn’t go as smoothly as everyone hoped. But Blizzard’s response shows that they care about their players’ experience. This gesture of goodwill is unique and only possible because the PC title is a subscription based game.
There has been speculation in the past about WOW porting over to consoles, but with a pay to play model intact, there’s very little chance of that happening anytime soon.
As we look forward to the full launch of The War Within, it’s clear that there are still some bumps in the road to iron out.
But with Blizzard actively working on solutions and compensating players for the inconvenience, there’s hope that the full expansion launch will go more smoothly.
So, get ready for your free day of game time, keep an eye out for more updates, especially on the WOW social channels.
