The future of the beloved Shenmue series hangs in the balance as recent developments cast doubt on the much-anticipated fourth instalment. However, passionate fans are taking extraordinary measures to keep the dream alive, showcasing the enduring appeal of this cult classic franchise.
A Project in Limbo
Yu Suzuki, the creative genius behind the Shenmue saga, recently shed light on the current state of Shenmue 4. In a candid interview with fan site Shenmue Dojo in May, Suzuki revealed that the project is still in its planning stages. “We’re not working on that right now,” Suzuki explained, highlighting the game’s primary need: a partner to bring the vision to life.
The search for a suitable partner comes at a challenging time for the gaming industry. With investments becoming increasingly hard to secure, finding backing for a niche title like Shenmue 4 has proven difficult.
This situation is a far cry from the success of Shenmue 3’s Kickstarter campaign, which raised an impressive £5 million, making it the most funded game on the platform to date.
Fans Take Action in Times Square
In an incredible move that demonstrates the unwavering dedication of Shenmue’s fanbase, supporters launched a high-profile campaign to garner attention for Shenmue 4. On June 4th 2024, the Shenmue Dojo fan site orchestrated a daring awareness push by renting billboard space in New York City’s iconic Times Square.
The 15-second advertisement featured beloved characters from the series surrounding the hashtag #LetsGetShenmue4, which quickly gained traction on social media platforms like X/Twitter.
I’ve been actively getting involved myself and if you’re a big follower of the iconic series, then you may want to look out for the above hashtag trending on the 4th of each month.
This electronic petition aimed to connect directly with Yu Suzuki, Sega and potential publishing partners, showcasing the strong demand for a new instalment in the series.
It resembles the spirit that has long propelled this underdog franchise from its humble Dreamcast beginnings to its record-breaking Kickstarter success.
The 110 Industries Connection
The troubles facing Shenmue 4 are closely tied to the misfortunes of 110 Industries, the company behind the ill-fated game Wanted Dead.
Initially, there were hints of a potential partnership between 110 Industries and Suzuki’s YS NET for Shenmue 4.
However, this collaboration never materialised, largely due to a series of unfortunate events that befell 110 Industries.
The outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict dealt a severe blow to 110 Industries’ finances, particularly due to their Russian connections.
A significant deal with Innovaud, which was meant to fund a Shenmue prequel titled Shenmue Zero, fell through. Additionally, plans to announce a collaboration with Yu Suzuki were scrapped as the company’s fortunes declined.
A Series of Unfortunate Events
The issues that plagued Wanted Dead’s development, including management missteps and geopolitical complications – also cast a long shadow over Shenmue 4’s prospects.
110 Industries’ reputation took further hits due to mismanagement during the Tokyo Game Show and a botched marketing effort by a PR firm.
These setbacks not only doomed Wanted Dead but also significantly impacted the likelihood of Shenmue 4 ever seeing the light of day. The dream of continuing Ryo Hazuki’s epic journey seems further away than ever.
Sega seem to have washed their hands with the series, but seeing all the Positivity and trends each month must spark their curiosity at least a tad.
Suzuki’s Unwavering Vision
Despite these setbacks, Yu Suzuki remains committed to completing Ryo’s story. He has confirmed that the next title in the series would be set in China, and he’s excited about the possibilities offered by advanced motion capture technology.
Suzuki also teased the idea of remaking the first two Shenmue games using Unreal Engine 5, should a partner be found. Although, his primary focus remains on bringing the fourth and potentially fifth instalments to fruition, which would conclude the story.
I personally took to X/Twitter and asked another big dedicated fansite in the form of Shenmue Forever, why a fourth instalment should be made, and they replied:
“Shenmue is a pillar of open-world video games. Its fan base is loyal and willing to support the series for as long as it takes to conclude the story. Yu Suzuki was and remains a genius creator, and thanks to new technologies, he’s able to offer a unique gaming experience, while preserving the spirit of the Shenmue saga with a new instalment”
The Road Ahead
While the future of Shenmue 4 remains uncertain, Suzuki isn’t putting all his eggs in one basket:
“There are many things I’d like to accomplish, i have about 5 or 6 concepts, ranging from small to big projects. I’m currently looking for a partner.”
While the obstacles facing Shenmue 4’s development are significant, the recent fan campaign in Times Square serves as a powerful reminder of the series’ enduring appeal.
From its December 1999 Dreamcast debut to the record-shattering Kickstarter for Shenmue 3 in 2015, the franchise has consistently been buoyed by its passionately loyal fanbase.
Suzuki has expressed keen interest in developing the latest entry in the series, but only if he can find the right partner to properly bring his distinct vision to life. The Times Square campaign might just be the catalyst needed to attract potential investors and reignite interest in the project.
As fans continue their tireless efforts to see Ryo’s journey through to its conclusion, the dream of a 4th entry may be deferred, but it’s clear that it’s far from forgotten.
With such dedicated support, there’s still hope that Suzuki will find the partner he needs to turn this dream into reality.
The day I will start Shenmue 4 will be one of my happiest in my life.
