Bungie have released a new developer blog for their online shooter Destiny 2, that unveils ambitious plans to revolutionise the game’s armour system. Set to launch with the upcoming Codename: Frontiers expansion next summer, these changes aim to breathe new life into a stagnant aspect of the game.
The current armour system has long been criticised for its complexity and lack of excitement.
Revamping the Stat System
Once players find the perfect stat combination, there’s little incentive to experiment with new gear. Bungie’s solution? A complete rework of stat mechanics and the introduction of set bonuses.
Under the new system, every stat point will provide a benefit, eliminating the current tiered approach.
This redesign will also help newer players understand the mechanics of their armour more intuitively, removing the frustration of having to hit specific tiers before gaining any benefits.
Stats will be capped at 200, with the 101-200 range offering additional powerful effects. This change is designed to encourage deeper investment in fewer stats and allow for more diverse build options.
Legendary armour pieces will now have a ‘Stat Archetype‘, determining primary and secondary stat types.
This should result in more pronounced stat distributions, making each piece of gear more distinctive.
Class items, such as Hunter Cloaks and Warlock Bonds, will also feature full stat distributions, bringing them in line with other armour slots.
This addition brings greater parity across all gear slots, ensuring every piece of armour contributes meaningfully to a build.
Some stats are being renamed and reworked for clarity. For example, ‘Discipline’ will become ‘Grenade‘, while ‘Strength’ will be renamed ‘Melee‘.
These stats will now offer increased cooldown reduction from 1-100, with a chance to gain bonus charges at higher levels.
This is part of Bungie’s effort to streamline player choices, making it easier to understand the impact of stats on combat performance.
Introduction of Set Bonuses
Perhaps the most exciting addition is the introduction of Set Bonuses. These perks, granted when wearing two or four pieces of a matching set, will add a new layer of strategy to build crafting. Bungie has provided several examples of potential set bonuses, including:
- Tex Mechanica: Boosts hip-fire performance
- Nonstop Aggression: Rewards aggressive playstyles
- Demolitions Expert: Enhances explosive weapon handling
- Vanguard Operative: Improves team support capabilities
These changes aren’t without challenges. Bungie acknowledges that vault space is a pressing issue for many players and is exploring long-term solutions.
They will not only add variety but also give players more long-term goals for perfecting their loadouts, which could extend player retention.
NOTE: All of the changes mentioned in this article are to be implemented next summer 2025 as of this writing, so don’t expect any of the features before that date.
The studio is also considering how to update existing Exotic armour to align with the new system.
While some players may worry about their current gear, Bungie assures that old Legendary armour will be minimally affected.
However, due to the global nature of the stat changes, some adjustments will be necessary.
As Destiny 2 approaches its next major chapter with Codename: Frontiers, these armour changes promise to reinvigorate the game’s loot system. By making armour a more active part of buildcrafting, Bungie hopes to reignite players’ excitement for gear drops and encourage greater experimentation with different playstyles.
