Key Highlights:
- IO Interactive severs ties with Conor McGregor after a court ruling against him.
- Content featuring McGregor in Hitman will no longer be sold or promoted.
- McGregor’s collaboration with IO included voice and likeness for “The Disruptor” mission.
IO Interactive, the developer of the acclaimed Hitman series, has officially ended its collaboration with MMA fighter Conor McGregor following a recent Irish High Court ruling.
The court found McGregor liable for sexually assaulting a woman in December 2018, resulting in damages of €248,000 (£206,000).
In response, IO Interactive issued a statement declaring that it would remove all McGregor-related content from its storefronts immediately.
The announcement reflects IO’s commitment to addressing the matter seriously and distancing itself from the controversy.
McGregor’s Role in Hitman
McGregor’s likeness and voice were featured in the Hitman World of Assassination game as part of The Disruptor mission, an Elusive Target event.
Set within the secretive Ark Society, this complex mission tasked players with taking down The Disruptor, a wealthy MMA fighter, while protecting another character, Tim Quinn.
The Disruptor mission, introduced as part of the Free Starter Pack, became available on November 15th and was slated to run until December 8th.
Additionally, IO offered The Disruptor DLC pack for $5/£3, which granted permanent access to The Ostentatious, an arcade contract featuring McGregor’s character.
This pack also included a set of cosmetics, items, and a new outfit for players’ freelancer houses. However, following IO’s decision, the DLC is no longer available, and promotional materials related to McGregor’s involvement have been taken offline.
IO Interactive’s Official Statement
On November 25th, IO Interactive publicly announced its decision to terminate its collaboration with McGregor, stating:
“In light of the recent court ruling regarding Conor McGregor, IO Interactive has made the decision to cease its collaboration with the athlete, effective immediately. We take this matter very seriously and cannot ignore its implications. Consequently, we will begin removing all content featuring Mr. McGregor from our storefronts starting today.”
Although IO is halting sales of McGregor-related content, the company has not indicated plans to remove previously purchased content from existing players’ libraries.
Broader Implications
IO Interactive’s swift action reflects an industry trend of developers distancing themselves from controversial figures.
By ending its association with McGregor, IO reinforces its commitment to maintaining the integrity of its brand and respecting its audience’s sentiments.
The developer, meanwhile, continues its work on an ambitious new James Bond project, which it hopes will kick off a trilogy.
As for the series, Hitman: Blood Money Reprisal recently launched on Nintendo Switch earlier this year which saw a re-polished version of the hit game.
With its focus on expanding its creative horizons, IO’s decision to sever ties with McGregor signals a prioritisation of ethical standards alongside game innovation.
This incident also highlights the complexities of partnerships in the gaming industry. Collaboration with real-world personalities can enhance a game’s appeal but carries inherent risks tied to their personal conduct.
As gaming evolves, companies may adopt stricter vetting processes or choose to rely on fictionalised characters to mitigate such risks.
For Hitman fans, this move underscores the evolving dynamics between gaming companies and their collaborators, where public perception and accountability play increasingly significant roles.
