Key Highlights:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 sets a new company record with over 3.5 million units sold in four days.
  • Launch bundles and hardware upgrades played a critical role in rapid adoption.
  • Demand remains strong ahead of key 2025 releases like Donkey Kong Bananza and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.

Nintendo has confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 is now the fastest-selling console in the company’s history, with over 3.5 million units sold globally between June 5 and June 8.

This figure surpasses the original Switch’s early performance, which reached 2.7 million sales in under a month following its 2017 debut.

According to the official statement issued on June 11th, strong day-one demand was driven by a combination of factors: hardware advancements, strategic retail distribution, and the inclusion of Mario Kart World in launch bundles.

The Switch 2’s enhanced specs – including an upgraded Nvidia chip, DLSS upscaling, and backwards-compatible performance boosts for legacy titles like Super Mario Odyssey and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have positioned the console as a true generational leap.

Beyond internal upgrades, the Switch 2 features an improved display, redesigned magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers, and a new C Button that enables GameChat.

This function allows players to voice or video call friends or share gameplay screens in real time, a notable addition for the hybrid console line.

These user-facing enhancements have been widely praised in early hands-on impressions.

Sales figures include all available configurations, such as the Mario Kart World Set and the region-specific Japanese-language edition sold at a lower price.

Nintendo has not broken down unit numbers per configuration, but each version contributed to the company’s all-time high launch total.

The Switch 2’s launch followed weeks of intense pre-order activity, with Nintendo and its retail partners implementing anti-scalper measures and maintaining consistent restocks to meet demand.

The company noted that production will continue at scale to ensure availability throughout the summer.

With upcoming exclusives like Donkey Kong Bananza and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond slated for late 2025, Nintendo expects sustained momentum.

Having a whole host of titles that are already out now and kicking, like Animal Crossing New Horizons and Hogwarts Legacy ported to the new console helps too.

While it remains to be seen if the Switch 2 can match the long-tail success of its predecessor – which now ranks among the top three best-selling consoles of all time, its record-breaking debut sets a high bar.

The Switch 2 is off to a formidable start, and with both hardware capability and software support aligned, Nintendo has positioned itself for another strong hardware cycle.
