Key Highlights:

  • Friday the 13th: The Game is being featured at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 despite its shut down in 2024.
  • A new collectible based on the game will be revealed, hinting at renewed interest in the title.
  • A growing number of signs point to possible plans for a sequel, remaster, or full revival.

More than six months after it was taken offline, Friday the 13th: The Game is once again making headlines.

Fans of the asymmetrical horror title will be watching closely as the now-defunct game takes centre stage during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, as part of the newly branded Jason Universe.

Game Shut Down, But Not Forgotten

Launched in 2017, Friday the 13th: The Game let players take on the role of Jason Voorhees or one of several camp counsellors trying to survive the night.

The game earned strong praise from horror fans for its faithfulness to the franchise. However, ongoing legal battles over the rights to the Friday the 13th IP eventually brought development to a halt, with the game officially becoming unplayable in late 2024.

Despite its initial popularity and faithful representation of the iconic horror franchise, Friday the 13th: The Game remained playable until the end of 2024, with servers staying active despite being delisted from digital storefronts after December 31st, 2023. In July 2023, Gun Interactive announced a series of in-game bonuses, including automatically reaching level 150, unlocking all kills, perks, and challenge skulls.

While the game was delisted and all support ceased, a May 2025 press release breathed new life into fan speculation. That announcement confirmed a partnership between Horror Inc., the company that owns the Jason Voorhees character, and Striker Entertainment, a licensing firm tasked with revitalising the brand.

Tucked into the details was a direct mention of Friday the 13th: The Game, alongside other upcoming projects like the Crystal Lake streaming series.

SDCC Panel and Collectible Reveal

Things escalated further with news from IGN and Bloody Disgusting confirming a Jason Universe panel at SDCC on Friday, 25 July. This panel is expected to celebrate Jason’s 45th anniversary with exclusive announcements, merchandise reveals, and giveaways.

Among the items revealed:

  • limited-edition Jason mask by Spirit Halloween
  • Exclusive Jason Universe 45th anniversary caps
  • An 18×12 Mondo lithograph designed by artist Peter Santa Maria (aka Attack Peter)
  • 7-inch Ultimate Savini Jason action figure by NECA, based directly on the now-defunct 2017 game

This figure, in particular, is noteworthy. It’s the first official collectible tied to Friday the 13th: The Game and was confirmed to be on display at NECA’s SDCC booth (#3545).

The NECA figure is based on Savini Jason, an exclusive skin created by horror legend Tom Savini in collaboration with developer Gun Media. It was a fan-favourite character that never returned once the game was removed from sale.

Now, with Horror Inc. and Striker Entertainment back in action, and merchandise being produced using assets from the game, many fans believe this is more than just a nostalgic tribute.

The decision to lead with a collectible based on Savini Jason, rather than more recognisable versions from the films, may be a calculated test of audience interest in content directly tied to the game.

This collectible could be a stepping stone to a full revival – whether as a remaster, sequel, or spiritual successor. Some are asking whether this renewed attention also means the return of other original characters from the game like Chad and Lapa.

Is Gun Media Involved?

One of the big unknowns is how involved original developer Gun Media is in these new moves. While co-founder Wes Keltner has publicly stated he would never work with Horror Inc. again, the use of Savini Jason strongly suggests at least some coordination occurred.

While there’s still no official word on a remaster or sequel, the signals are becoming harder to ignore.

Last year a reputable source claimed that not one, but two Friday The 13th games were in development. There’s not been much on that since, but today’s news is a good sign if you’re a Jason Vorhees fan.

A fanbase that once mourned the game’s demise is now cautiously optimistic that it could return, possibly in a new form, or even under new leadership.

With the Jason Universe panel scheduled for July 25th, all eyes are on San Diego. While a new game announcement hasn’t been confirmed, the fact that Friday the 13th: The Game is being featured again after years of silence is already significant.

It suggests that the IP is once again in active development, and that the game might not be dead after all.
