Key Highlights:

  • Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble brings the PlayStation franchise to mobile as a free-to-play arena shooter.
  • Developed by Oh BiBi, it combines combat, upgrades, and classic platforming within a Captain Qwark simulation.
  • Fans can register now for early access, though its microtransaction model remains unconfirmed.

Sony surprised fans by announcing Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble, a new mobile spin-off in the long-running PlayStation series. While most were hoping for a PS5 sequel from Insomniac Games, this latest entry is instead being developed by Oh BiBi, a studio known for its mobile action titles. It marks another attempt to bring PlayStation’s iconic franchises to phones and tablets, and I have to admit, I’m curious to see how the series’ signature mix of shooting and platforming translates to touch controls.

R&C Ranger Rumble is described as a multiplayer arena shooter that takes place inside a simulation designed by Captain Qwark. Players will battle it out across small-scale maps, upgrading their weapons and abilities between matches. If you’re curious, you can check out the reveal trailer below.

Even though this is a mobile release, it retains a lot of the DNA of the mainline games – colourful gadgets, fast movement, and plenty of chaos. Registration for early access and beta testing is already live on the game’s official website, giving fans an early look before launch.

The game will be free-to-play, which suggests that microtransactions are almost inevitable, although the developers haven’t detailed how progression or monetisation will work yet. It’s easy to see why Sony might be testing the waters here. Mobile gaming is an enormous market, and even smaller spin-offs can generate huge profits compared to console blockbusters. To put it into perspective, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 may have sold millions of copies, but a game like this could surpass it in profit thanks to lower costs and recurring purchases. Insomniac had to give roughly 30% commission to Marvel, that alone is a massive chunk of the profits from the game. That’s the reality of today’s industry, even if it’s not the direction long-time fans were hoping for.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart proved what the PS5 was capable of, showcasing fast loading, rich detail, and seamless world-hopping. Ranger Rumble won’t hit those technical highs, but it might succeed in keeping the series visible between major releases.

Personally, I think this could be Sony’s way of keeping interest in the franchise alive while Insomniac focuses on Wolverine and other big projects. It’s a calculated move, one that might frustrate some, but ultimately makes sense for long-term brand engagement.

There’s still hope that a true next-gen Ratchet & Clank sequel is on the horizon, especially after files from the 2023 Insomniac data breach hinted at another mainline title in development.

Until then, Ranger Rumble will have to carry the torch, offering a lighter, faster way to experience the series on mobile. Whether it’ll feel like a genuine Ratchet adventure or just a side experiment remains to be seen, but I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on it.
