Street Fighter 6 Balance Update Nerfs Mai and Buffs Elena and Sagat

Street Fighter 6 December Balance Update 2025.

Key Highlights:

  • Street Fighter 6’s December 16 balance update focuses on Mai, Elena, and Sagat.
  • Mai’s looping pressure and Burnout control have been toned down, while Elena and Sagat receive usability buffs.
  • The patch also includes universal system tweaks and a wide range of bug fixes.

Street Fighter 6 is rolling out a targeted balance update on December 16, and this one is very much about refinement rather than reinvention. Capcom has zeroed in on three characters who stood out for very different reasons. Mai’s pressure was proving too restrictive at most levels of play, while Elena and Sagat were still struggling to fully express their intended identities after being added post-launch.

I like this kind of update. It shows restraint. Instead of swinging wildly at the entire roster, Capcom is tightening the screws where competitive friction has actually formed, while also cleaning up a number of edge-case bugs that matter more than they might sound on paper.

Mai has been the biggest talking point. Even after previous nerfs, her Kachousen-based pressure and corner dominance were still forcing opponents into high-risk defensive decisions far too often. This update lowers her ability to loop offense, makes Burnout less inevitable during prolonged blocking or parries, and slightly reshapes post-forward-throw situations in the corner so defenders actually get to play again.

Elena and Sagat, on the other hand, come out of this patch stronger. Both characters were released after the last major balance pass, and this update feels like Capcom finally finishing their homework. Elena gets better combo routes, improved anti-air utility, and more rewarding follow-ups, while Sagat gains consistency, improved low-pressure tools, and more reliable conversions that better suit his slower, methodical style.

Below are the official Street Fighter 6 battle adjustment notes for the December 16 update, shared by Capcom. These changes apply following scheduled maintenance.

Street Fighter 6 December Battle Balance Update Patch Notes

Street Fighter 6 will undergo maintenance on Monday, December 15, 2025 at 8 p.m. Pacific Time, expected to last four hours. A battle balance update and additional changes will be implemented, including HUD customisation options.

Patch notes are currently available for 9 of the 28 characters adjusted in this version. Mai, Elena, and Sagat received the most significant changes.

Character-Specific Changes

Cammy

  • Standing Light Kick
    • Fixed an issue where the attack could hit an opponent behind Cammy.

Chun-Li

  • Orchid Palm, Forward Strike, Senpu Kick
(Light Punch, Light Kick, or Medium Kick during Serenity Stream)
    • Fixed an issue where Chun-Li could still block during some recovery frames when Perfect Parried.
    • This reduces overall frames when Perfect Parried.

C. Viper

  • Dynamic Controls
    • Fixed an issue where the normal version of Focus Force could be performed instead of the Overdrive version.
    • Fixed an issue where certain high jump cancels failed during Burnout or Super Art Level 1.
  • Jumping Light Punch, Jumping Heavy Punch
    • Fixed an issue where hitting a crouching opponent forced them into a standing position.
  • Focus Force (Level 3 Normal and Overdrive)
    • Fixed an issue where stunned time did not increase on Punish Counter.

Dee Jay

  • Speedy Maracas
    • Fixed an issue where the Level 2 Super Art gauge version activated below the required meter.

Dhalsim

  • Merciless Yoga (Critical Art)
    • Corrected Drive Gauge reduction and chip damage values during cancels.

Elena Adjustments

Elena’s changes focus on Boosted Leopard Snap and Super Art Level 1 Meteor Volley.

  • Boosted Leopard Snap
    • Reduced pushback on block.
    • Improved pressure consistency at mid-screen and in the corner.
  • Meteor Volley
    • Startup reduced from 9 frames to 7.
    • Improved anti-air utility.
    • Follow-up attacks now generate Super Art gauge.
    • Fixed an issue where Elena could re-enter the air after being hit while falling.

Additional adjustments were made to Leopard Snap variants, Moon Glider follow-ups, and Overdrive versions to improve reliability and combo flow.

Mai Adjustments

Mai’s changes focus on Drive Gauge interaction and corner pressure.

  • Standing Heavy Punch now reduces less Drive Gauge on block.
  • All versions of Kachousen now grant more Drive Gauge recovery when parried, including Perfect Parry scenarios.
  • Held and Boosted Kachousen variants are less effective at forcing Burnout.
  • After a forward throw in the corner, spacing now allows defenders to contest more effectively.
  • Reduced ability to maintain looping pressure without risk.

Multiple Kachousen variants, including Midare Kachousen and Boosted versions, received Drive Gauge value adjustments to reduce oppressive sequences.

Sagat Adjustments

Sagat received consistency and usability improvements across core tools.

  • Light and Medium Tiger Nexus now move forward more, improving combo potential.
  • Crouching Light Kick and Medium Kick received improved frame data and reduced pushback.
  • Tiger Monolith anti-air consistency improved.
  • Heavy Tiger Uppercut now enters cinematic state more reliably.
  • Tiger Knee Crush follow-ups now connect more consistently.

These changes aim to compensate for Sagat’s slow movement while reinforcing his mid-range control.

Universal Adjustments

  • Drive Gauge block visuals now change colour when even a small amount of Drive remains.
  • Crouching Light Kick pre-hit hurtboxes are now invincible to cross-up attacks when striking from behind just before landing.
  • Removed unnecessary block idle hitboxes from certain Super Art Level 3 and Critical Arts.
  • Fixed scenarios where intended unavoidable Super Arts could be evaded on jump landing.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed inconsistent hitbox behaviour during multi-hit projectile clashes.

Street Fighter 6 continues to show a steady, measured approach to balance, and this update fits that philosophy perfectly. Mai players will need to be more deliberate, Elena finally gets tools that reward mastery, and Sagat feels closer to the grounded powerhouse he is meant to be.

It’s not a flashy patch, but it’s a smart one, and those tend to age the best.
