After months of rumours and speculation, Nintendo has officially confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is getting a full remake for Nintendo Switch 2.

The beloved Nintendo 64 classic, often regarded as one of the greatest games ever made, is being revived as part of the series’ 40th anniversary celebrations. Nintendo unveiled the project during its latest Nintendo Direct, revealing a short teaser video that reintroduces players to Link’s journey through Hyrule with an entirely new visual style.

Rather than following the artistic direction established by Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, the remake appears to adopt a completely fresh look. Nintendo described the adventure as being “reborn” for Switch 2, suggesting this is far more than a simple remaster.

The trailer itself echoes the opening moments of the 1998 original. Narration from the Great Deku Tree accompanies scenes of Link sleeping uneasily in Kokiri Forest. While the original game showed Zelda and Sheik fleeing Hyrule Castle during Link’s vision, the remake instead focuses on the Triforce glowing on Link’s hand as the nightmare unfolds.

Although gameplay footage was absent, the footage shown points towards a complete graphical overhaul. Nintendo has yet to reveal whether the remake will include new content, quality-of-life improvements, or additional modes. Pricing details also remain unknown.

Originally released in 1998, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time transformed the franchise by bringing it into the third dimension. It introduced mechanics such as Z-targeting and context-sensitive actions, features that would go on to influence countless action-adventure games over the following decades.

The game has been revisited several times since its debut. It appeared on GameCube alongside the Master Quest version, received a critically acclaimed Nintendo 3DS remake in 2011, and later became available through Nintendo’s Virtual Console services and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

With another brand-new 3D Zelda likely still years away, revisiting one of the series’ most celebrated entries makes sense. From my perspective, Nintendo seems to be treating this remake as more than a nostalgic project. The early footage suggests the company is aiming to give one of gaming’s most influential titles the same kind of top-to-bottom rebuild modern audiences expect.

Nintendo has confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake will launch for Nintendo Switch 2 later in 2026. More information is expected in the months ahead.
