Key Highlights:
- Halo: Campaign Evolved Steam Deck Verified status has been confirmed by Valve ahead of launch.
- The remake launches on 28 July 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
- Valve says the game meets its highest compatibility standards, although real-world performance remains to be seen.
Halo: Campaign Evolved has officially earned Steam Deck Verified status ahead of its launch later this month, confirming that Valve expects the upcoming remake to run well on its handheld PC.
The verification answers one of the biggest questions surrounding the game’s PC release, with Halo making its debut across multiple platforms rather than remaining exclusive to Xbox hardware. Players planning to experience the shooter on Steam Deck should be able to do so from day one when the game launches on 28 July 2026.
According to Valve, the Halo: Campaign Evolved Steam Deck Verified rating means the game’s default graphics settings and controller layout are fully compatible with Steam Deck. Controller icons display correctly, in-game text is readable on the handheld’s screen, and players should not need to make significant adjustments before jumping in. An internet connection is still required for the initial setup process.
While the Verified badge is encouraging, it does not always guarantee flawless performance. Some games carrying Valve’s highest compatibility rating have still required players to tweak graphics settings or accept lower frame rates to achieve the smoothest experience.
There are, however, additional reasons for optimism. Halo Studios has already confirmed that the game meets the highest compatibility rating for Windows handheld gaming devices, including the Xbox Ally. Promotional footage has also shown Halo: Campaign Evolved running on Steam Deck ahead of release, suggesting handheld optimisation has been a priority during development.
We’ve just seen Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced get its very own verified status too, which tells me that more and more developers are optimising for the handheld.
The remake recreates the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign while introducing several new features, including three brand-new prologue missions, modernised visuals, quality-of-life improvements, and an optional third-person mode. It marks one of Xbox’s latest first-party releases to launch across multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5 and PC.
Players who prefer physical media have also received good news. In a Q&A session, HaloWaypoint has confirmed that retail editions for both Xbox and PlayStation 5 will include a physical game disc rather than a download code, allowing collectors to own a traditional boxed copy.
Halo: Campaign Evolved launches on 28 July 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC for $49.99. Those purchasing the Premium Edition will receive up to five days of early access beginning on 23 July 2026.
I think the Steam Deck verification is an important milestone because handheld compatibility has become an increasingly significant factor for PC releases. Even so, I’d still wait to see launch-day performance tests before assuming the default settings deliver the best possible experience, as many AAA games benefit from a little manual optimisation on Steam Deck.
