Key Highlights:
- Sony will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028.
- New releases after the deadline will be sold digitally through the PlayStation Store and retailers.
- Existing games and titles released before January 2028 will remain unaffected.
PlayStation physical discs ending in 2028 is now official, with Sony confirming it will discontinue physical disc production for all new games released on PlayStation consoles from January 2028.
The announcement marks one of the biggest changes in PlayStation history, bringing an end to decades of physical game releases on CD, DVD and Blu-ray discs as the company continues its shift towards digital distribution.
In a statement published on the official PlayStation Blog, Sony said the decision reflects changing consumer habits and the wider entertainment industry’s move towards digital media.
“As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.”
Sony
The company confirmed that any game launching before January 2028 can still be released on disc. However, every new PlayStation title launching after that point will be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and at participating retailers.
Sony also stressed that the change will not affect games that have already been released physically, nor those scheduled to launch before the January 2028 deadline.
According to the company, moving away from discs allows it to better match how most players already purchase and access games today.
Although physical discs are disappearing, Sony has confirmed that games will still be sold through retailers alongside the PlayStation Store. The company has not yet explained exactly how those retail versions will be delivered, leaving open the possibility of boxed download codes or another digital redemption format replacing traditional game cases with discs inside.
I have to say that this is one of the biggest industry shifts we’ve seen since digital downloads first became mainstream. The announcement itself isn’t particularly surprising given the direction the market has been moving for years, but putting an official end date on physical PlayStation game discs makes the transition feel very real. It also raises important questions for collectors, game preservation and long-term ownership that Sony has yet to fully address.
Sony has previously reported that digital purchases now account for the vast majority of full-game sales across PlayStation platforms. The latest figures shared with investors showed that almost 80% of full PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 game purchases were made digitally over the past year, illustrating why the company believes now is the right time to make the change.
The decision could also have implications beyond the PlayStation 5. While Sony made no mention of the PlayStation 6, industry analysts believe the move makes it increasingly likely that the company’s next console will launch into an all-digital future, with any disc drive potentially becoming an optional accessory rather than standard hardware. However, Sony has not confirmed any details about its next-generation console, so any discussion around PS6 hardware remains speculation.
The move follows a wider trend across the gaming industry. PC gaming has largely abandoned physical releases, while digital storefronts have become the primary way many console players buy new games. Sony believes ending physical disc production is the natural next step as digital purchasing continues to grow.
Just last week Rockstar announced that Grand Theft Auto 6 won’t contain a physical disc.
For PlayStation owners who still prefer buying games on disc, there is still time. New physical PlayStation releases will continue throughout 2027, with the transition officially beginning for games released from January 2028 onwards.
