  • Decision linked to strategic shift toward core franchises.
  • Skydance’s Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra remains in development.

Electronic Arts has cancelled its in-development Black Panther game, ending a project that had been in the works since at least 2023.

Alongside the cancellation, EA has also closed Cliffhanger Games – the studio established specifically to handle the title, resulting in a fresh wave of layoffs.

The decision marks another contraction in EA’s approach to licensed intellectual property and signals a strategic tightening around its original franchises.

The news was first reported by IGN, which cited an internal email from EA Entertainment president Laura Miele.

In the message, Miele stated that these changes were intended to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.”

EA now plans to prioritise development resources around key franchises including BattlefieldThe SimsSkateApex Legends, and its upcoming Iron Man game.

The cancellation also follows EA CEO Andrew Wilson’s earlier statement that the company would be scaling back future investment in licensed IPs.

While Miele reaffirmed EA’s ongoing commitment to the Iron Man project and Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi series, it’s evident that only a select few external partnerships will survive this restructuring.

Although never shown publicly, EA’s Black Panther game was pitched as a third-person, single-player experience set in a reactive, open-world version of Wakanda.

Leaks and job listings hinted at player freedom in choosing which Black Panther to embody, with T’Challa mentioned as a likely playable character.

Given the scale of the Black Panther films and the cultural impact of Wakanda within the Marvel brand, expectations for the game were high despite its early development status.

Cliffhanger Games was founded specifically to develop this title and had not yet released any games. Its closure ends the studio’s existence before it could deliver its debut project.

The move adds to EA’s ongoing series of layoffs. While EA did not confirm the exact number of jobs affected in this round, the cuts are said to be fewer than the 300 roles lost in March 2025 across Respawn and other divisions.

Additional job losses have reportedly hit EA’s mobile and central services as well, as part of broader cost containment. This follows EA’s earlier decision to cancel an unannounced Titanfall game and end its licensing agreement with the World Rally Championship, which itself led to redundancies at Codemasters.

Despite the setback, Black Panther fans still have another project to look forward to.

Skydance New Media’s Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, a narrative-driven game featuring Steve Rogers and Azzuri, the WWII-era Black Panther is still in active development.

Led by Amy Hennig, known for her work on the Uncharted series, Marvel 1943 is now scheduled for release in 2026 following a delay.

The cancellation of EA’s Black Panther game is a notable blow for Marvel’s expansion into premium video games.

While Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has found enormous success under Sony and Insomniac, efforts to diversify with games like Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy have yielded mixed results.

EA’s decision underscores the risk and complexity involved in building AAA experiences around Marvel characters, especially when those projects must compete with internal IP for resources and long-term ROI.

EA’s decision to cancel its Black Panther game and shut down Cliffhanger Games reflects a hard pivot toward focusing on established franchises with proven market traction.

Though disappointing for fans hoping to explore Wakanda in a new interactive format, it’s also a signal that Electronic Arts is consolidating its portfolio in preparation for a more selective, franchise-driven future.

We’ll just have to wait and see Black Panther in Skydance’s upcoming Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra title, keeping the character’s digital legacy alive, at least for now.
