The Updated Story and Setup
Sons of the Forest now opens with a reveal. Xian Yu Zhang confronts the player at the crash site and asks “Who invited you?”. He rips off a press ID from your clothing before knocking you out. That ID confirms the protagonist is Jack Halt, a journalist, not a mercenary.
Later, an email from Edward Puffton shows he hired Jack to investigate the island and protect Virginia. This anchors the story and your role.
How to Reach the Finale
To reach the endgame, gather the Rebreather, Rope Gun, and Shovel from their caves. Dig into a Maintenance Bunker to get the Maintenance Keycard. Grab the VIP Keycard from the cave nearest the Rebreather cave. Enter the snowy cave by a western lake and drop to the broken aircraft to collect Ancient Armour.
The VIP Bunker keypad is dead until you visit the Residential Bunker near the large eastern lake. Go downstairs to the office with multiple screens. Interact with the PC showing Timmy at the VIP entrance. This unlocks the VIP Bunker door.
Inside, reach the living quarters. A bathroom with a smoky broken wall leads to the Golden Door. Pick up the Armour Plater blueprint on the nearby corpse.
Recipe: 4 Wire, 1 Skull, 33 Bones, 25 Rocks, 4 Golf Cart Batteries, and 12 Solafite Ore to power the machine. Build the Armour Plater outside, insert the Ancient Armour, add 12 Solafite, then interact with the skull and batteries to plate it. Wear the plated armour to open the Golden Door.
The Final Sequence
The final cave is linear, filled with lava and mutants. Timmy guides the path. At the Golden Cube, he opens a laptop with a countdown and says, “This was supposed to fix me, it is making me worse.” The far wall phases to a futuristic city while his mutation flares. When the Cycle ends, the entrance reopens to a Sluggy. This is Jianyu Zhang, now transformed. You wake on the beach.
In 1.0, the beach sequence adds a boss fight. Zhang attacks, shouting “What did you see?” while tearing through the rescue team. Defeat him. A horde of mutants then floods the beach. A mercenary group arrives to help, and a golden artefact manifests, wiping out the horde. At this point, you choose.
All Endings
Leave on the helicopter
Boarding the helicopter unlocks Fought Demons Achievement. Kelvin boards if alive. If Virginia is alive and fully befriended, and Kelvin survives, you unlock Keep Your Friends Close. This is the best companion ending.
Stay on the island
Ignore the helicopter, pick up the backpack behind you, and you unlock Fight Demons. The world remains open with your builds intact. You can call the helicopter later by returning to the VIP Bunker and using the radio. Doing so then plays the leave cutscene and credits.
Optional artefact path when you stay
If you reached the beach with six artefact pieces, beams of light appear inland. Follow them to the seventh piece. Assemble the complete artefact and use its powers while you keep playing. There is no extra achievement, but it changes your sandbox.
Companion Presence Inside the Cube
Who joins you in the Golden Cube depends on prior choices. Timmy always arrives. Kelvin joins if he is alive. Virginia joins if you gained her trust and kept her alive.
A known bug can drop her if she is not in your active party before you enter the VIP Bunker, so bring her in before the final run.
Post-Credits and Epilogues
Creative Mode unlocks after finishing the game. You can save before the beach and rewatch different endings. The 1.0 update adds new epilogues based on who survives.
- Timmy epilogue: if you leave, his condition worsens. A doctor says he cannot help him. Timmy produces Solafite, the golden mineral from the caves, and pursues a cure. Magazines and papers then show he stabilises and becomes a pharmaceutical leader by harnessing Solafite. He buys another Solafite island and goes missing, setting up the sequel.
- Kelvin epilogue: Jack visits Kelvin in a brain injury ward. They build a toy log cabin together. It’s a quiet nod to his stick-gathering life.
- Virginia epilogue: she is rushed to surgery along a dim hospital corridor, likely to remove her extra limbs.
- Secret happy ending: if both Kelvin and Virginia survive and Virginia is fully befriended, a light epilogue plays five months later. Jack drives a sports car, Virginia is human and pregnant, and Kelvin sits in the back seat in his pink pajamas. It is a rare bright outcome after the trauma.
Lore and Key Theories
The Golden Cube is an artefact tied to alternate realities. The countdown marks a Cycle, and those outside during the Cycle transform. Timmy’s book and documents across the island point to multi-reality travel. The chrome-jacket man from the intro is Zhang, who failed to enter the Cube and later became the Sluggy. Eric and Timmy appear together during key fights, showing they are still researching artefacts and their effects.
Tips for Clean Runs to Each Ending
- Best ending checklist: keep Kelvin alive, fully befriend Virginia, bring both to the VIP Bunker, and leave on the helicopter.
- Stay route with artefact: reach the beach with six artefact pieces, choose to stay, then follow beams of light to the last piece.
- Safety net: save at the Residential Bunker before unlocking the VIP door, and again outside the Golden Door. This prevents losing companions.
- Armour Plater tip: plating Ancient Armour takes several minutes. Clear the area, build a shelter, and save before starting.
What Unlocks After Finishing
Finishing the game unlocks Creative Mode. You can also replay the finale to see all cutscenes by saving beforehand. If you chose to stay, the world remains open with your builds intact, and you can still leave later via the VIP Bunker radio.
In my runs, the cleanest path to the best ending is to unlock the VIP Bunker through the Residential PC, plate the Ancient Armour in daylight with a small camp on the surface, and walk Virginia and Kelvin into the finale together. If Virginia fails to appear, reload to a save outside the Bunker and rebind her to your party.
