As Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns prepares to launch, fans are eagerly anticipating not only the arrival of new fighters Cyrax, Sektor, and Noob Saibot but also the return of Animalities, a feature that once defined a pivotal era in the franchise’s history. NetherRealm Studios has been gradually unveiling these transformative finishers, with each character boasting a distinct animal form and brutal execution.
Johnny Cage’s Cinematic Shark Attack
The latest reveal spotlights Johnny Cage, whose Animality perfectly encapsulates his larger-than-life persona.
Developers NetherRealm showcased the new Johnny Cage Animality on social media site X/Twitter and you can view the new 20 second video below:
In a nod to his silver screen roots, Cage’s finisher begins on a film set, complete with a clapperboard labelled “Heavy Bite”.
As water floods the scene, the action star dons a shark costume, transporting his unfortunate victim, in this case, Shang Tsung – to the depths of a cerulean ocean.
What follows is a clever recreation of the iconic Jaws film poster, with Cage circling his prey before lunging from below. The shark-suited Cage then brutally bisects his opponent before moving in to complete his grisly meal, all whilst the announcer declares his victory.
This cinematic Animality not only aligns with Cage’s essence as a self-proclaimed visionary actor but also demonstrates NetherRealm’s commitment to crafting imaginative and fitting finishers for each kombatant.
The studio’s creative approach is further evidenced by unexpected transformations, such as Reptile’s surprising metamorphosis into a Venus flytrap.
It’s still good to see obvious Animalities out there as well, like Scorpion morphing into, uh, a Scorpion. Can’t argue with that!
Johnny Cage’s Animality serves as a perfect example of how NetherRealm Studios is leveraging each character’s unique traits to create memorable finishing moves.
By transforming into a shark and recreating a famous movie scene, Cage’s Animality not only delivers a brutal finish but also reinforces his identity as an action star within the Mortal Kombat universe.
This follows on from his two fatalities that showcase the film star posing with his opponent in a selfie and using a flash car to finish them in style.
Animalities: A Free Update for All Players
While the Khaos Reigns expansion introduces paid content, the Animalities update will be available to all players at no additional cost.
This move ensures that every fighter, including guest characters, will have access to these spectacular finishing moves.
As anticipation builds for today’s release, it’s clear that NetherRealm Studios is pulling out all the stops to deliver a well-rounded and engaging experience.
The game’s attention to character-specific details, such as Johnny Cage’s cinematic Shark Animality, showcases the depth and creativity that players can expect from this latest instalment in the Mortal Kombat series.
