Key Highlights:

  • Resident Evil 5 has been rated for Xbox Series X, fuelling speculation about a possible remake.
  • A similar ESRB rating recently appeared for RE6, raising questions about Capcom’s plans.
  • Capcom has yet to announce a Resident Evil 5 remake, but prior remakes and past ratings leaks suggest something could be in development.

The ESRB has officially rated Resident Evil 5 for Xbox Series X, marking the second time in recent weeks that an existing Resident Evil game has been rated for Microsoft’s latest console.

Last month, Resident Evil 6 received a similar classification, leaving fans wondering whether Capcom is gearing up for a major announcement.

While both titles have long been available on Xbox platforms, these new ratings have sparked speculation about possible next-gen enhancements, new ports, or even full-fledged remakes. Given that Resident Evil 4 received a highly successful remake in 2023, some fans are now questioning whether Resident Evil 5 is next in line.

However, as of now, Capcom has made no official statements regarding a remake or a next-gen upgrade.

Could Capcom Be Preparing a Resident Evil 5 Remake?

Resident Evil 5’s new rating has naturally led to speculation about a potential remake. The franchise has seen a steady release of remakes, with Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 receiving modern updates that enhanced gameplay, visuals, and narrative depth.

While it’s possible Capcom is simply releasing a next-gen port, the sudden emergence of ratings for both Resident Evil 5 and 6 raises questions about the franchise’s future.

Historically, ratings board listings have occasionally leaked game announcements ahead of schedule, but there’s one key factor that casts doubt: the lack of a PlayStation 5 or PC rating. If Capcom was planning a full remake, it would be unusual for it to only appear on Xbox Series X. That said, mistakes on ratings board websites do happen, though it seems unlikely that the same ‘error’ would occur twice in a row.

Resident Evil 5’s Shift to Action Over Horror

Resident Evil 5 is one of the more divisive entries in the series. While it was well-received at launch, its increased emphasis on action over survival horror alienated some long-time fans.

The game followed Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar as they investigated a bioweapon outbreak in Africa, marking a shift from the tension-filled horror of previous entries to a more co-op-focused, action-packed experience. While RE6 doubled down on this action-heavy approach, its reception was considerably more negative, prompting Capcom to course-correct with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.

If a RE5 remake is in development, it remains to be seen whether Capcom would adjust the balance between action and horror, similar to how it refined Resident Evil 3’s pacing and structure in its remake.

Capcom’s Silence and Future Resident Evil Projects

Despite all the speculation, Capcom has yet to confirm any upcoming Resident Evil remakes. The company’s most recent showcase focused on Monster Hunter Wilds, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and Capcom Fighting Collection 2, leaving fans without any major RE announcements.

With so much uncertainty, many are wondering whether Capcom will eventually reveal a remake of Resident Evil 5, or if these new ratings simply point to updated ports with technical enhancements.

Given that previous remakes have helped fill the gap between mainline entries, an announcement may not be far off. Although, with other classic RE titles like Code: Veronica and Resident Evil Zero still awaiting modern updates, there’s no guarantee that Resident Evil 5 will be the next remake in the pipeline.

For now, all eyes are on Capcom to see whether these new ratings lead to something substantial, or if they’re merely placeholders for routine re-releases. With the iconic survival horror’s resurgence in popularity, fans are eager to see what the future holds for the franchise.

One entry that has been 100% confirmed to be in development is RE9, but it’s in early stages and you shouldn’t expect it to hit the shelves anytime soon.
