NetherRealm Studios has confirmed that no additional downloadable content or story expansions will be released for Mortal Kombat 1.
Following the release of the Definitive Edition and weeks of speculation, the studio has now stated publicly via X/Twitter that it will continue to support the game with balance updates and bug fixes, but all major post-launch content has concluded.
Mortal Kombat 1 launched on September 19th, 2023, and was supported for a year and a half with new characters, features, and the Khaos Reigns expansion.
The last notable addition, the T-1000 character and Madam Bo Kameo, arrived in March 2025.
By comparison, Mortal Kombat 11 received support for over two years, including multiple Kombat Packs and story DLC.
The relatively early cut-off for Mortal Kombat 1 has prompted fans to question whether internal factors such as reported Warner Bros. Games restructuring, played a role.
The community response has been largely negative. Players cite the abrupt nature of the announcement and a perceived lack of transparency as ongoing issues.
The frustration is further fuelled by a previous statement from franchise co-creator Ed Boon, who in September 2024 reassured players that support would continue “for a long time.”
That comment, now resurfacing across social media, is being seen as contradictory to the recent pivot.
Many players were still hopeful for additional Kombatants and a second story expansion.
Instead, the end of new content arrives with little fanfare and significant backlash, particularly from players who invested in the Premium Edition or expected post-launch longevity comparable to earlier entries.
The marketing that NeatherRealm did for the game was pretty impressive, and there seemed to be new content reveals every other week, but for some reason, this reboot simply hasn’t hit the spot for some fans one way or another.
You can understand the Nintendo Switch MK community in particular, as they had several issues with the title on that specific platform, and also had to wait for the single-player Invasions Mode unlike Xbox Series, PC and PS5 players.
Now, NetherRealm Studios has confirmed its shift in focus to a new project.
Although the studio has yet to reveal its nature, speculation is leaning heavily toward Injustice 3, especially given the pause in Injustice releases since 2017.
This mirrors the timeline seen in the MK11 to MK1 transition, where a development shift ended post-launch support before a formal reveal.
That said, Warner Bros. has not officially confirmed the title or even the genre of the new project. The possibility of it being a new IP, or a reimagining within the existing Mortal Kombat framework, cannot be ruled out.
While the end of content support is disappointing, the Mortal Kombat 1 Definitive Edition offers a complete package for new players.
It includes all paid DLC, the Khaos Reigns expansion, and bonus cosmetic content such as the Mortal Kombat Movie Skins, all at no extra cost.
For late adopters, this is arguably the most cost-effective way to experience the fighting game in full.
Despite selling over 5 million copies and contributing to the franchise’s total of 100 million units sold, Mortal Kombat 1 underperformed when compared to MK11‘s 15+ million sales milestone.
The latest entry has been marked by inconsistent updates, communication missteps, and unrealised expectations.
With post-launch content now concluded, fans are turning their attention to the future. Whether the next title is Injustice 3 or something entirely new, the hope remains that the next MK instalment will be much better than this reboot.
