NeatherRealm have released the Mortal Kombat 1 Definitive Edition, a bundle that consolidates nearly all post-launch content into a single package.

Available digitally on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch, this edition arrives after roughly 18 months of updates and downloadable content since the game’s original launch in 2023.

The bundle includes the full base game, the Khaos Reigns story expansion, two Kombat Packs packed with new fighters and Kameo characters, Shang Tsung as a playable fighter, and a variety of cosmetic skins, several of which tie in with the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 film.

In a free update, players also gain access to Animality finishing moves, a nostalgic feature pulled from the franchise’s earlier titles.

What the MK1 Definitive Edition Includes

The full list of content featured in this version includes:

The package is priced at £54.99/$69.99, with an upgrade option available for existing owners at £49.99/$59.99 depending on platform. An impressive 2 and a half minute trailer accompanied the announcement, which showcased all the content that comes with the MK1 DE.

While the bundle is a generous offer for new players, veteran fans are interpreting its quiet release as a potential signal that NetherRealm Studios is winding down active development on the fighting title.

The release of the T-1000 and Kameo fighter Madam Bo in March marked the last major content drop, and no significant future plans have been teased apart from a few movie skins.

This has led to renewed scrutiny of earlier statements by NetherRealm’s creative director Ed Boon, who had previously committed to long-term support for the title.

Now, in light of low player counts on Steam, which have dropped below those of MK11, and a complete lack of new content announcements, many are questioning whether the studio has shifted its focus internally to its next project.

Set in a rebooted timeline forged by Liu Kang after ascending to Elder God status, Mortal Kombat 1 attempted a fresh narrative take, reshaping character backstories and introducing new lore mechanics.

The Khaos Reigns expansion brought back classic elements, including the return of brutal Animalities, offering fan-service while expanding the game’s story.

Even Quitalities made a return, which was unexpected but welcomed.

While it didn’t match the commercial or critical highs of MK11, Mortal Kombat 1 still managed to deliver innovation and spectacle in gameplay.

It didn’t help not having fan-favourite features like The Krypt, which was omitted for this latest entry.

The mixed reception, however, may have influenced how Warner Bros. and NetherRealm chose to close the chapter, not with a grand finale, but with a bundle and silence.

At this stage, there’s no official confirmation that development has ceased, but the absence of communication post-release and the complete packaging of all content into one edition suggest that NetherRealm is pivoting toward whatever’s next.

Whether that’s another Mortal KombatInjustice, or a brand-new IP remains to be seen.

For now, Mortal Kombat 1 Definitive Edition stands as both a full-stop and a summary of an ambitious, if uneven, chapter in the franchise’s legacy.
