  • Resident Evil: Code Veronica remake reportedly ahead of schedule.
  • Capcom is said to be giving the project a budget on par with Resident Evil 4 remake.
  • Major character and story reworks expected, including Steve Burnside and Wesker.

Capcom is said to be remaking Resident Evil: Code Veronica, with multiple leaks suggesting this is not just a minor update but a large-scale project comparable to the Resident Evil 4 remake.

According to long-time insider Dusk Golem, the game is ahead of schedule, has a strong budget, and will include significant narrative and gameplay changes.

The remake is reportedly in the hands of developers who worked on the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remakes. That alone suggests Capcom is treating this as a core instalment rather than a spin-off.

Having covered the series closely over the years, I’ve noticed that whenever Capcom assigns its A-teams to a project, the results tend to define the franchise’s future direction. This could mean Code Veronica is finally being positioned as essential to the canon, rather than a side entry often overlooked because of its lack of a numbered title.

What i will say, is the leaker who’s proven to be reputable, is kind of going back on a previous leak. Back in September of 2024, Dusk Golem claimed that both RE Zero, and Code Veronica wouldn’t match the ambition of the RE4 remake.

Why the sudden U-Turn is unknown, but perhaps they’ve got fresh inside information, or Capcom have had a change of heart. Either way, it’s always best to wait for official confirmation from the game developers.

In regards to the latest set of leaks, one of the most notable changes concerns Steve Burnside. Originally, Steve was remembered for being one of the most irritating characters in the franchise. Reports suggest Capcom is reworking him to come across more innocently and less grating, toning down the awkward obsession with Claire.

I replayed the original last year, and I can say this is long overdue. His character has not aged well, and a modern rewrite could make him more likeable while still retaining his importance to the story.

Rockfort Island is another area receiving a major overhaul. Rather than being a series of linear zones, the location is said to be expanded into a semi-open structure with more freedom to explore. This could bring it closer to the design philosophy seen in the RE Village hub areas, where exploration and replayability were key.

Albert Wesker is also reportedly more central this time around, with the H.C.F. organisation becoming a bigger part of the plot.

One particularly exciting detail is the possibility of Chris Redfield finally squaring off against Wesker in a proper boss fight rather than just a one-sided cutscene.

The budget is another telling factor. If it’s really comparable to the Resident Evil 4 remake, this confirms Capcom isn’t treating RE Code Veronica as a side project. In practical terms, that means top-tier visuals, motion capture, and modern gameplay mechanics that can stand alongside the series’ biggest releases.

Although the 2000 Dreamcast version rocks, that was 25 years ago as of this writing, and I, and hardcore RE fans really need to see a modern overhaul now.

On release timing, the picture is less clear. While Resident Evil Zero is rumoured to have faced delays due to a development reboot, Code Veronica appears to be progressing smoothly.

With the series’ 30th anniversary arriving in 2026, that seems like the perfect stage for a reveal. A release window around 2027 looks most likely given Capcom’s schedule with past entries.

For me, the most interesting part of these leaks is how Capcom is rethinking the game’s place in the franchise. Resident Evil Code Veronica X has always been vital to the overarching story, especially with Wesker’s evolution, but it has never received the recognition of numbered titles.

A faithful yet updated remake could finally correct that and cement it as one of the most important chapters in Resident Evil history.
