Key Highlights:

  • Leaks hint at a third-person Resident Evil Code Veronica remake.
  • Resident Evil’s 30th anniversary is fuelling expectations for multiple remakes.
  • Player mechanics suggest character switching and new stealth elements.

As Capcom prepares to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its iconic Resident Evil franchise in 2026, the rumour mill is already spinning, and Resident Evil Code Veronica X is at the centre of it all.

Despite Resident Evil 9 and a new film slated for 2026, fans are hungry for a remake of the 2000 Dreamcast cult classic.

Recent leaks, community backlash, insider commentary, and fan sentiment all point toward one reality: a Code Veronica remake may not only be plausible, it may already be in the works.

Claire Redfield’s Return: What We Know

4chan leak in late 2023 claimed that Capcom had begun internal playtesting of a Resident Evil Code Veronica remake.

According to the alleged tester, the game adopts the third-person over-the-shoulder camera from the RE2 and RE4 remakes, ditching the original’s tank controls and fixed camera system.

This shift modernises gameplay while making the title more accessible to newer players.

The playable prologue begins with Claire Redfield recounting the Raccoon City incident, reminiscent of Leon’s intro in Resident Evil 4 remake.

However, the remake transforms the original cinematic escape from the Umbrella facility into a slower, tutorial-style gameplay sequence, reinforcing Claire’s role as the emotional and narrative anchor of the story.

Dual Protagonist Gameplay: Resident Evil Zero Vibes?

Once on Rockfort Island, Claire meets a reimagined Steve Burnside, with both characters now offering distinct gameplay styles:

  • Claire is better with knives and firearms, and excels at puzzles. She can also detect hidden items – enhancing exploration.
  • Steve runs faster, holds dual-wields pistols, throws knives, and features light stealth mechanics – suggesting inspiration from recent gameplay additions in RE4 remake.

Players can reportedly switch between Claire and Steve at will, much like Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen in Resident Evil Zero.

This new mechanic fusion hints that Capcom may be testing systemic interactivity that could also appear in the rumoured RE Zero remake, another title that is being much talked about.

Insider Signals: Dev Team 1 and the Capcom Crackdown

Perhaps the most convincing indicator came when Capcom issued a takedown against a fan remake of Code Veronica in late 2022, behaviour the publisher previously exhibited before launching other official remakes.

Shortly after, insider Dusk Golem (a consistently accurate leaker) revealed Capcom is working on five Resident Evil projects, including Code Veronica and Resident Evil Zero.

Even more promising is the rumoured involvement of Capcom Dev Team 1, the same internal team that delivered the acclaimed RE2 and RE4 remakes. Their involvement, if true, would be a extremely good news in driving fan confidence, suggesting this isn’t just a cosmetic update, but a full-blown reimagining.

Stephanie Panisello, who portrayed Claire Redfield in Resident Evil 2 Remake, recently expressed her thoughts on the potential for a modernised remake of RE Code Veronica.

While she acknowledged the widespread desire among fans for a revitalised version of Code Veronica, she emphasised that she has no official influence over such projects.

“I love that people want more Claire, and if I had an opportunity, I would jump on it”

Court highlighted her enthusiasm for more opportunities to reprise her role as Claire, noting that if given the chance, she would consider how to adapt her performance and the game’s elements to better suit contemporary gaming standards, recognising that not all aspects of the original would translate seamlessly into a modern context.

Timeline & Release Expectations

With Resident Evil 9 aiming for a 2026 release window and no mainline title announced in the past two years, it’s increasingly likely that Code Veronica or RE Zero could drop as part of Capcom’s 30th-anniversary celebration.

Dusk Golem believes RE Zero might launch first, potentially as early as late 2025 or early 2026.

Code Veronica remake could follow shortly after, possibly staggered with the upcoming Switch 2 hardware, which was speculated to host one of these remakes.

Why a RE Code Veronica Remake Matters

While RE Code Veronica is sometimes overlooked in the mainline canon, its narrative depth and psychological themes mark it as a cult classic. It bridges Claire’s search for Chris, the Ashford family’s madness, and the continued evolution of Umbrella’s twisted legacy.

More importantly, it features some of the franchise’s most eccentric antagonists – Alfred and Alexia Ashford, characters long overdue for a modern graphical and emotional overhaul.

Even enemies like the Bandersnatch, who’s first appearance has gone down as one of the scariest moments in the series, is in need of a makeover.

Moreover, Code Veronica is one of the last remaining classic entries untouched by Capcom’s RE Engine remakes.

Its remake would not only complete the remake portfolio (RE1RE2RE3RE4RE Zero), but also bring closure to Claire’s unresolved arc, something fans have clamoured for since the Dreamcast era.

While these leaks remain unconfirmed, the pattern recognition (shut down fan projects, insider leaks, reuse of RE Engine, gameplay enhancements tied to Claire/Steve mechanics) suggests Capcom may be repeating its blueprint used for previous remake launches.

And with Resident Evil being one of Capcom’s biggest cash cows now supported by a Netflix series, merchandise, and a new movie on the way, betting on a Code Veronica remake feels more like an inevitability than wishful thinking.

Until Capcom makes things official, all fans can do is wait, speculate, and replay the classics.

But if the whispers prove true, Resident Evil Code Veronica might just rise from the ashes as the next crown jewel in Capcom’s modern remake legacy.
