The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Game Update Support Ending

Bones from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Game and End of an Era text

Key Highlights:

  • Gun Interactive confirms no more major updates for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre after May 2025.
  • Peer-to-peer matchmaking is planned as part of the game’s transition phase.
  • Servers will remain online and the game won’t be delisted from digital storefronts.

After nearly two years of disturbing cat-and-mouse mayhem, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre will no longer receive any major content updates.

Gun Interactive has confirmed that the May 2025 patch marks the final wave of substantial development.

While the blood-soaked ride isn’t coming to a complete halt, servers will stay online and the title remains purchasable. This shift signals the end of an era for one of the more faithful horror adaptations in recent memory.

Released in 2023The Texas Chain Saw Massacre offered players a gripping asymmetrical multiplayer horror experience.

It placed fans directly into the boots of the sadistic Sawyer family or the desperate survivors trying to escape their brutal clutches. With strong art direction that nailed the 1970s Texas grit and a gameplay loop centred around 3v4 matches, the horror game quickly found a niche audience.

Initial reviews leaned positive, praising its authenticity and unique take on the genre.

However, despite being backed by the weight of a beloved horror IP, sustaining long-term interest in a competitive live-service space proved difficult.

At its peak, it enjoyed healthy player counts, but as of May 2025, the Steam version reports just over 600 concurrent users. For a multiplayer-focused title, that’s a sharp decline.

Gun Interactive explained that the May update represents the game in its “fully realised” state.

No further downloadable content, balancing passes, or bug fixes will follow.

The development focus will now shift toward preparing the game for peer-to-peer matchmaking, a necessary change given the winding down of central server support.

Notably, this is not a complete shutdown. Unlike Friday the 13th: The Game, which faced severe licensing issues leading to its removal from stores and eventual server shutdown, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre will remain live and purchasable.

That alone offers some solace to players still invested in the experience.

The path to release was not without complications. Licensing restrictions meant Gun Interactive couldn’t include content from every entry in the film franchise.

Instead, they chose to build around the original film’s lore while introducing new characters to flesh out the Family and Victim rosters.

Fan-service additions like the 2003 Leatherface variant and Bones, played by horror veteran Bill Moseley, added flair but couldn’t prevent the inevitable drop-off.

There’s also a degree of bittersweet timing. The game was recently featured as a free offering for PlayStation Plus subscribers in April 2025, likely pulling in a new wave of curious players.

For them, the announcement that development is ending so soon after might feel abrupt, especially as there were hopes of additional content or expanded lore arcs.

What’s Left for Players?

Despite the halt in development, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre still has life left.

The peer-to-peer transition will keep the core gameplay accessible, and with no delisting planned, the community won’t be forced to abandon the game entirely. However, the lack of new content and absence of live balancing patches may limit its long-term viability in the multiplayer space.

Without fresh updates, the title now exists as a static experience, enjoyable for what it is but unlikely to evolve.

Gun Interactive’s decision reflects the wider challenge facing niche multiplayer horror games.

Capturing an audience is hard enough; retaining them amid service-heavy titans like Dead by Daylight or Phasmophobia is another level of difficulty altogether.

While The Texas Chain Saw Massacre won’t be receiving any more love from the devs, what it accomplished, preserving the eerie, sunburnt dread of the 1974 film and introducing a new generation to its terror, is worth remembering.
